Quick question about motherboard beep codes

I have a ECS P4VMM2-A motherboard in a computer that someone brought to me
with a problem of booting ,,, she was able to see it boot to the desktop
without any icons and an explorer.exe error ,, but when i got it i couldn't
get anything on the monitor and noticed that the vga socket was pulled out
a bit and quite loose ,,, she admitted that she was yanking on the monitor
plug instead of unscrewing it ,, and now all i'm getting is a blank screen
and then the computer beeps ,,,,first once ,, then a long pause and then
two quick beeps and then a short pause and one more.

You can hear the hard drive whirring into action , but then nothing but the
above beeps.

I feel that the motherboard is toast due to her yanking on the monitor cord
, but not 100% sure.

Any thoughts??

Thanks

To bad the guy didn't wait. I build computers and have since the 1970's.

If he'd find the manufacturer of the MB their site might have either a
manual or the error codes available. If it was part of a system like
Gateway then they might know how to find the codes.

If  he can't find the codes then it's a sure bet he won't be able to update
the bios either. If that''s the case he should toss the MB.

I have been told I am full of it many times Will. Somehow I don't think
that was treasure they were thinking of but instead had something to do
with a bull.

i have waited around Chief ,, the reason it was posted here in the first
place was that i'm a member of this group as well and always have it open
, that's how i blundered and put it in here ,,,, and thanks for your
comments ,, it appears that the m/b is toast and headed for the heap ,,
another video card plugged in wouldn't disable the onboard vga and i
couldn't get into the bios because there was nothing on the screen.

To many letters for most states. Besides I haven't come out of the

Here in Ontario we can use 8 letters ,, i'm sure we could make it fit
somehow ,,,why are you still in the "closet"?? It's not like it's a
contagious disease or anything ,, or are you trying to squeeze out the
"good food" for a little longer??? ;)

My wife told me last year than if I could ever convince Shania Twain I
could have her. I'm not adding one more reason why it will never happen
until I'm sure it's impossible.

My wife allowed me to use the 'catch and release' method after I went over
50. I think she thinks I'm to slow now days. That's not it. It's that my
bait ain't what it used to be.

Mary, the older we men get the more threatened we need our mates to act.
I'm surprised you haven't figured that out yet. In fact a public slap or
spectacle would make my day. I'd be strutting like a rooster given the
key to the hen house for a month.

What's important is not climbing the mountain just that someone besides
ourselves thinks we can.
Mary - 11 Jan 2006 00:12 GMT
Yeah, I kinda see your point.  Don't you think older wives feel
threatened???

As you posted this on a diabetic N/G, I have THREE(3) suggestions:
Find an endocrinologist who is also a computer repairman.....

ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, but how do we know it's off-topic? What if the problem with his
motherboard is that it has diabetes? :-)

Heres the link your MB. The manual shows a APG slot so you can add a
videocard or at least try one to see what kind of damage there may or may
not be.

I'll assume you disabled the onboard video before you try another card.
Hey, on the plus side, you can build a new one now. My wife just hates it
when I say "Time to upgrade"  lol

My wife is the same way Joe ,, she runs to hide the plastic whenever she
hears those words ,,, but as for the disabling ,, i don't even have
anything coming up to see on the monitor ,, it's blank  so i couldn't
even get into the bios to do the changes.

Depending on the age and type of the MB (sorry, I haven't looked at
your specs) the setting can be a jumper instead of in bios. However,
in most it's either autodetect with bios override, or just a bios
setting.

*IF* it's a bios setting, there is a way to save this MB. What you do
is find out the keystroke sequences needed to jump into bios and make
the change (ask someone with an identical MB if the manufacturer does
not know), and then enter it "blind" on your system. Hopefully, you
can beat the error message and make the change after a few tries. I've
done this once and it wasn't easy, but worked.

Also, if you believe stress on the connector might be a cause, then
have you had a look at the connections under magnification? I fixed
one MB with a little soldering a few years ago after similar damage.

http://www.bioscentral.com/beepcodes/awardbeep.htm

You have an Award BIOS.  The beep codes point to a video card failure.
Since your video card is integrated you are probably out of luck.  The
integrated adaptor is PCI so you can install a second PCI or better yet an
AGP video card.  Some BIOSs will switch to the good one automatically, some
won't.  Since you cannot boot to the BIOS setting screens you cannot make
the necessary changes unless by luck the BIOS designers took that into
account.  Only one way to know for sure.

The board is likely toast.  Not an expensive repair if you are handy and can
pull and replace the old one.  You can find a lot of new boards on eBay for
less than 50.00.  They are a tad scarce since the chipset is obsolete but
replacements are out there.  Some even in retail channels.

http://baber.com/baber/411/ecs_p4vmm2-a.htm

The above is your board.  It's a fairly standard socket 478 Micro-ATX board.
Replacements should be possible to find.  Being micro-ATX you cannot use a
full size board in your existing chassis unless you upgrade that as well.
I'd suggest an Intel board or something that does not employ the VIA
chipset.  I am a computer systems consultant and build systems among other
things so I've worked with a huge assortment of boards over the years.   The
Intel D865GLCL would be a good match for your processor and form factor.

Thank you Paul for the input ,, i've tried the video card route and no
such luck ,,, the only problem with this set up is the person has old
sdram in it so it looks like a new board altogether as the type of board
she has now has both type of ram slots , but the new ones only have room
for ddr ram.

Just as easy to get her to buy new ram and new board ,,, it's already in
a full size case so fitting the new board in will be no problem. The only
problem will be getting her to spend some cash ;)
