Hello all,
I came across the below when doing some searching on the subject.  It's
long, but useful.  It's also fairly user friendly :-)  :

Take care,

Noticed this:

"Sugar alcohols are incompletely metabolized in humans.
For example, it has been shown that 10 to 20% of ingested
sorbitol and xylitol and 30 to 40% of ingested mannitol,
were recovered in the urine (15)."

Makes counting calories tough.

Especially when this statement is taken into consideration as well:

"Furthermore, the presence of sugar alcohols in a
meal has been shown to result in malabsorption of other
energy nutrients, such as fat and carbohydrate, in addition to
the sugar alcohol itself (5)."

The 0% absorption rate for lactitol in the small intestine helps explain
why I ended up wishing I was dead when I ate some Jelly Bellys
containing the stuff though.  It felt like someone was tying my guts
into really tight knots.  Maltitol gives me no problems - no gas, no
blood sugar spikes (even after 4 hours), not even the feared "laxative
effect".  I just count the calories into what I need and keep it as a
once every three weeks or so treat.  It's still junk food, even if it
isn't problematic for me otherwise.  Dark chocolate is still a better
choice for me than Valium. ;-)

Take care,
Carmen
