My doctor's office called Saturday to tell me he wants me to see an
Endocrinologist. He had asked me in his office if I had ever seen one and I
told him yes that once I did and that the doctor knew I was out of meds at
that time but would not give me any until another month at next visit and
blood work returned.

He also was told I won't drive and still wants me to see one. Guess I lose a
perfectly good doctor.

How do I tell him that his doctoring skills are just fine and that his plan
won't work for me if I myself don't let it. He did not fail...I did.

Well that is all I wanted to tell you.

Thanks for listening.
Michelle - 02 Jan 2006 04:27 GMT
Diana,

Why do you keep blaming yourself for your rocky relationship with your
doc?  He doesn't sound like a "perfectly good" doctor.  Let me tell
you, his bedside manner sucks.  Part of his job is to empathize with
you.  I'm sure if you don't drive, there is reason.  He needs to take
that into account.  He maybe an absolute genius, but if he can't relate
the information and find a plan that works for you, that's a moot
point.  You are taking too much of his lack of effective communication
skills on yourself.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi Michelle,
I have only been going to him less than a year. The others here can tell you
what I had before and she has almost done me in. This one admitted he
doesn't have the knowledge it takes to help me with my diabetes. I just feel
I did this to myself and unless I comply with what the doctor tells me then
nothing will help. Thank you for your sweet encouragement. That means alot
to me.
Michelle - 02 Jan 2006 19:56 GMT
Diana,

Okay, I can see where your newer doctor would be a step up.  I am
behind the curve, being more of a newbie here.  I've read the posts in
this thread of others who are more familiar with your situation.  It
seems to me that you are so afraid of failure that you don't want to
try.  Totally understandable.  But Diana, you've got nothing to lose by
going to see what this endo has to say.  You can't be any worse off.
And heck, if you rode with Reisa, you might have a great time too.

I know you blame yourself for your condition, but I want you to realize
that being susceptible to depression (which I assume has been a big
component of your inability to always be compliant) is just as much a
matter of genetics as being susceptible to diabetes is.  Many people
have the mistaken impression that because something occurs in the
mind/brain, they should be able to control it.  Well, you've got no
more chance of telling your brain what chemical reactions to make than
you do of telling your pancreas to get with it and produce more
insulin.  See what I mean?  I think if you understood this and were
able to take it to heart, then although it wouldn't alleviate the
depression, it might help with your self-imposed stress of playing the
blame game, and fearing failure quite so much.  Please think about it.
If you were able to do this and then concentrate on the successes--like
your 50 pound weight loss this past year--you might find coping just a
little easier.

I don't know how things work there, but here transport can
be arranged for the elderly or disabled to go to medical or
hospital visits etc. Some ask for a small fee like $5 but
others are free.
Loretta Eisenberg - 02 Jan 2006 15:53 GMT
Diana, Jan brought up something interesting.  In New York, we have
something called access a ride where they pick you up and bring you home
24 hours a day, seven days a week.  You need to show that you cannot
take public transportation because of your health.

I wonder if Ohio has such a service.

It is very reasonable, the same as public transportation.

I forgot what it is called here. We use to use it when I was a secretary at

You might want to check with your local hospital, your doctor's
office, or even the United Way office. Any of those places should be
able to tell you if there is such a service in your area. I know we
have one here in Cedar Rapids that travels around at least five rural
counties picking people up at their door and delivering them to their
appointment. Then the pick them up when they are done and take them
back home. The cost to the consumer is negligible and in many cases
free.

The same service in the UK, or most parts of it. Usually free, and often
takes one to the shops, as well as to the doctor, podiatrist etc.

They do that here too. They take them to the supermarket or any other
stores so they can get the things they need and/or want and then
deliver them back home again. We even have a late night one here so
shift workers can call and get a safe ride home after the regular bus
services are done for the day. That one does cost $5 per trip, but
that's a lot less than a taxi.

Can you get someone to drive you to the Endo?  Can you call a cab?  Do they
have some sort of service in your area that takes people to the Dr. for
free?  We have such a service here but you have to meet certain
qualifications, such as being over a certain age.

I can drive, but only short distances, and I have an extreme problem with
driving on the freeway.  So wherever I go can't involve the freeway.  My dad
takes me to my Endo. because it's in another city and is really too far for
me to drive.  I did make that drive once...not to the Endo. but to a place
nearby and it was very bad for me.  I got there with no problem, but my legs
began to cramp badly on the way home.  Luckily I returned home past midnight
so there wasn't much traffic on the road and I didn't have to do much
stopping.  It's hard for me to keep my foot on the brake pedal for long,
especially when my leg starts to cramp or go weak.

I have never had a GP who was willing to treat me for my diabetes or thyroid
problem.  They've always sent me to an Endo.  And I don't have a problem
with that.  I just wish there was one who was closer to where I live!

Cabs are very expensive here. Buses are no longer here and I have no RL
friends in this area. I too can drive maybe 5 miles as I use to go to the
other doc alone she was about 3 miles away but this one would be in
Cincinnati and there is no way I could find anything there or drive there
without costing me my life or more importantly some one else's. I will
figure something out. Thanks Julie

you are looking for excuses.  Reisa is a friend,  It is not about using,
it is about being there as a friend.  It is not like you go every wee to

You are depressed and nothing positive is in your mind.  Everything is
negativity for you now.

You either grab the hand that wants to help, or you wallow in self pity,

Diana, you NEVER bother people or take up their time. This is a support
group for diabetes, not a support group for perfect people. If this were
a stop smoking support group for instance, people don't automatically
manage to quit even after many, many tries, and people still offer
advice and help and encouragement. Same here. Just keep posting, reading
posts, and doing what you can. Hopefully, you get back on track soon.

Oh for goodness sake! You are not "bothering" any of us who are your

shoulder for now because I know that sooner or later you will begin to

I wish I could find and send you that old poster of the kitten who is
hanging from a tree limb by only his front claws. It says, "Hang in

Diana, dear friend, Loretta, Reisa, I and others love you as only true

because I feel your pain, but I definitely want you to share that pain
with me. A burden shared is easier to carry.

I assume that the doctor knows that what he is doing for you is not
working and thinks that an endo will have more ideas on how to get you
compliant.

What can you do.  Well you can tell him that you like him very much and
am happy with him and that no other doctor will change you.  Or, on the
other hand, Diana, you can try to improve so that by the next visit he
will be happy with your progress.

I think he wants to do what is best for you

I dont take it as he is abandoning you.

Yes EXACTLY !!  This is my plan. :-)  I agree with you on what you have

next best thing is get my butt in gear and do what I know is right. Thanks
