We love to kick around those little figures!
I'm glad to see that you don't seem to in any kind of panic mode and are
into the questioning phase.
There's lots of support here fro the newly dxed, keep reading!
I like to suggest the Gretchen Becker book "The First Year Type 2 Diabetes:
An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed".
I was a real help to me when I was first dxed. I think it helps to have a
nice written text handy.

When I was first dxed I started off with the same meal "carb-counting" thing
you're doing.
I was looking and looking for stuff that was exactly 15 carbs. I hate doing
the math in my head.
It's a good wway to start. You'll find as time goes on that how your BG
"spikes" and for how long become important also. That's where the 1 and 2 hr
testing comes in.
Once you get into a good control mode (it may be months) you can reduce the
testing somewhat.

Do you stick yourself on the sides of your fingers, near the top?
Does your lancet thingy come with a dial to increase/decrease the depth?

I just got the part in your post about insulin shots, are you T1 or T2?

Well, I'm not sure what you mean by lab numbers. My BG remains a tad high
for the most part but has stayed no higher than the 130-140's. I had a ham
salad sandwich for a snack on low carb bread and tested an hour after eating
it and my BG was 119. I am 44 and weigh a little over 200 lbs. and am 6'
tall. I have lost about 15 pounds since this being diagnosed a little over
two weeks ago. The sodas and beer I have cut out are probably the culprits
for that weight. I did go out and have four Micelob Ultra beers (2.6 carbs a
bottle) a few days ago and tested my BG an hour and a half afterwards and it
was 108, which is the lowest reading I've had since my diagnosis. The beer
was consumed over nearly a four hour period. I know beer is not good thing
to drink in my condition but they told me at the hospital I could have a
little with food every now and then. Hey, you gotta live a little bit!
Anyway, I am eating low carb stuff but miss fruits and some vegetables that
I've read contain a lot of starch. I generally ate pretty healthy before
this happened to me but am amazed at what some things can do to ones BG.
Heck, I figured Subway might be a healthy choice for fast food every once in
a while but I guess it still could be if you ditched the bread. Not much
point in that I guess. Oh well, I have a lot to learn and got me a Betty
Crocker diabetic cookbook on the way. I have a wonderful wife who has been
very supportive and loving which helps more than I can say. Thanks for the
warm welcome.
