Meal Replacement Drinks?

Thread rating: |
Wild Monkshood - 28 Dec 2005 04:35 GMT I've been thinking of replacing one meal a day with a meal replacement drink. I did buy a four pack of Slim-Fast Wild Berry Smoothies, and they were as awful as I remembered. The Glucerna line for Diabetics look interesting, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to take out a loan to try one. Anyone tasted them? My plan is to consider replacing the meal that I would need the less energy after, say supper or whatever, depending on my schedule/plan for the day. Any opinions on the wisdom of meal replacement for a diabetic (Type II) and/or brand/flavor recommendations....

I find them VERY handy for travel and convenience.
I usually buy mine from a food surplus store (99 cent type store) and never know what line they will have in. But, I generally like the taste, and I was having the low-carb ones even before my DX. About the only variety I don't like is chocolate (I find it tastes like mud, even though I usually like real chocolate) but strawberry or vanilla usually are fine for me regardless of make.
I've never tried Glucerna. They are indeed expensive, and also seem to have the highest carbs of any I've seen.

I didn't like the liquid meals. I thought chocolate Glucerna tasted "chemical" (mothballs ? ). The chocolate Slim-Fast Atkins meal had fewer carbs, was a bit less expensive, but tasted odd in its own way.
To be fair, both were aspartame-sweetened and aspartame doesn't taste very sweet to me.

I may buy a four pack of the Glucerna just too try it....

> Regards > Old Al cowgirl_karen@lycos.com - 28 Dec 2005 14:08 GMT I tried the Glucerna chocolate drink and they tasted OK. As promised on the label - my blood sugar stayed down despite the relatively high carbs. The drink is pretty satisfying as a meal and I don't get hungry for a pretty long time. I also tried the meal replacement bars - they also worked for me, but the taste is not great. They taste like a off-brand candy bar you might buy at the dollar store. My non-diabetic son loves the Glucerna bars - he says they give him tremendous energy for marching band practice.

Thanks for the information. Even if the bars weren't so good tasting, that'd probably easier for me than drinking a liquid.

Mary - 28 Dec 2005 23:47 GMT As long as I'm able to purchase them, I'm using an Atkins shake for breakfast--one or two carbs per can and lots of vitamins/minerals. And I like the taste, too.
