Mouth smells like apples

Hello everyone!

I have a question, namely is it true that if one child's mouth (17
months) smells like apples, this particular child may have diabetes??

How can this be true? I've read about it in a magazine for Child Health
and I couldn't belive my eyes!

Note!
The particular child I'm speaking, eats apples every day

Thanks!

It is more like a nail-varnish-remover smell, and if it is like that then
Type 1 diabetes is possible. How is your child's weight? How often does the
child get teeth cleaned to remove the smell?

Please take the child to a doctor. We are not doctors, and a child is too
precious to be trusted to us for online diagnosis.

12 kilograms, no there are NO other simptoms. No the smell does not
resemble the nail varnish remover!

I still think the child should be taken to see a doctor. It is simply not
possible to be too careful with a child so young that he cannot tell you
what he feel like.

Ja, that's for sure. Now the fruity smell is gone, his mouth doesn't
always have this smell, I forgott to mention this. This mornins he ate
apples too, so I stil belive this to be the ONLY explanation. He is
happy, and runs all day long. He wouldn't have been so happy, or in
such a good mood, if he had had something.

Then why are you asking?  Get him to a doctor.  This *support* ng is no
substitution for competent medical advice.  He's too young and the potential
consequences too devastating to be messing around with this on a ng.

When a child is developing type 1 diabetes their breath gets a fruity
smell as a result of DKA diabetic ketoacidosis which is a potentially
fatal condition if left untreated.

If you suspect diabetes in a 17 month old child for any reason,
regardless of their diet, you take them to the doctor or ER and have
them tested for diabetes.

If you don't, the child could die if they are type 1 and left
untreated.  I was diagnosed at 8 years old and almost died by the time
I was brought in.

If the parent is afraid of appearing over protective or whatever else
may embarrass them, they need to get over themselves and always err on
the side of caution when it comes to children.

Andron , are there any other symptoms that you notice.  If the child
eats apples that might account for the apple breath,  I am not a doctor
and I believe you should call your pediatrician and get his opinion and
perhaps have the child tested for diabets.

Thanks Loretta! No there are NO other simptoms that one can notice. I
personally think that it is absolutely normal for him to have an apple
breath as he eats apples+combined with home - made cheese everyday!
Anyway the testing is of utmost importance

If you have a glucose meter, or have a friend who has one, it might be
simple enough to do a quick test yourself. That is no substitute for a trip
to the doctor, but at least it will give you an idea. If his fasting BG is
over 100 mg/dl, I would recommend follow up with a doctor immediately... I
check my own son periodically, because it runs in our family.

Mouth odors can be a sign of serious disease.

Only your doctor can do the tests to find out for sure. If you are at all
concerned, get him checked.

Are you sure that smell is cat food?  My cat spends most of her time doing
other things besides eating(if you know what I mean)
If I had to guess at my cats breath, I'd have to say its probably smells
more like BUTT then anything.

I put a box of "cat butt flavored chewing gum" into my 10 year-old
niece's Christmas stocking.  I'm curious as to what it's flavor is
actually.  ;-0

a new knee pain.  I ws really feeling sorry for myself.  You have made my
