Ozgirl - 12 Dec 2005 01:56 GMT > How long does it takes for the cough to subside after switching from > Enarapril(ACE) to DIovan(ARB)? A few days in my case. I was on a fairly low ACE dose at the time though. How long since your change?
ck - 12 Dec 2005 03:35 GMT She switch to ARB on Thursday, 3 days ago.
Ozgirl - 12 Dec 2005 10:01 GMT > She switch to ARB on Thursday, 3 days ago. I think possibly early days yet, then. If it is not gone within another week might be worth having a chat with the doctor.

Nev. - 12 Dec 2005 10:30 GMT > How long does it takes for the cough to subside after switching from > Enarapril(ACE) to DIovan(ARB)? > ck Depends. If the cough is not caused by the ACE, it probably won't.
Years ago I had a fellow worker tell me I should see a doctor about a cough, so I saw my endocrinologist, and he took me off the ACE medication.
Some time later on I went to a cardiologist, and the first thing he told was that I had serious asthma and it was long term. He prescribed medication which helped with the cough and improved my energy levels. He also diagnosed a sticky heart valve.
When I told my GP about this, he said, "How would he know."
When I went back to my endo and told him about this, he put me back on the ACE medication.

Ma¢k - 12 Dec 2005 14:14 GMT The other day I was watching a drug company commercial on Altace an ACE inhibitor. They got to the end where they list all of the possible side effects. Amazingly they did not use a speed talker to read the list of side effects. I have none of them except 1, and this is the first time I have seen or heard of with Altace.
Some users will experience severe hypoglycemia.
Pardon!?!?!?!?
so I checked the dates on when I started experiencing severe sudden hypos and when I started taking Altace and when the dosage was upped. Shortly after I started taking it I started having a lot of hypos. Shortly after I upped the dosage, again I started having a lot of hypos. Both times they tapered off with some adjustments in insulin dosage. I still get sudden hypos, very severe just not as frequently.
Does anyone know if hypos is listed anywhere as a possible side effect with ARBs?
When I get in to see my endo about this we are in for one hell of a bitch session if he knew about this possibility.

Lowered need for insulin (or other hypoglycemic medications) is a potential side benefit for both ACE-Is and ARBs.

I've been taking Altace (5mg) for over 2 years and have never noticed any hypos because of it. Not to say it might have had some play into a few mild hypos, but nothing that I can directly tie to the Altace. How much are you taking? Maybe the bigger the dose, the more that side effect happens.
This is from their official website www.altace.com
"Prescription ALTACE is not for everyone. ALTACE may cause swelling of the mouth, tongue, or throat, which could cause extremely serious risk and requires immediate medical care. There have been rare reports of low blood sugar in patients taking ALTACE with medicine for diabetes. Please contact your doctor if you have symptoms of low blood sugar such as sweating or shakiness. Common side effects include persistent dry cough, dizziness, and light-headedness due to low blood pressure. Do not take ALTACE during pregnancy, as death or injury to your unborn child may result, or if you've experienced serious side effects related to previous ACE inhibitors."
They mention low blood sugar when taken with other diabetes medicine so it could be having an affect on you. It hasn't with me.
Best, Kurt

Nev. - 13 Dec 2005 23:48 GMT > ck, I couldnt stand that cough Note:
YMMV, This is not a cure, This is not a medical treatment.
I was going to computer studies at night and was having trouble trying to stop coughing during the lectures, and was trying all sorts of lozenges, etc. This was being caused by the asthma I didn't know I had..
Eventually the best thing I found to minimize my coughing was sugar free caramel or chocolate confectionery. Eventually I took the table of contents along to one of the medical specialists I was seeing and asked him what was in this confectionery that helped make my coughing much more bearable. He looked at list of contents and said he couldn't see anything there that should alleviate my coughing. I could only guess that perhaps the 66% maltitol and 16.5% Mannitol were somehow lubricating my throat etc. These days I would only have piece of confectionery on one day and maybe no more tor another week
