got a question.  did you say a while back that having pain increases
your bg's or that taking pain killers does?

Pain increases my bg's, it also depends on how much pain
i'm in also.  some days its only mild pain where I see a small
rise.. other days when I can hardly move, i'm still battling 400's
easy... just increase pain meds and switch to pain basal and
just ride the wave till it ends.

why whats up?

bulging cervical disk.  I tried vicodin--didn't touch the pain.  Now I'm
on Percocet which helps a bit.  Either I'm too inactive, requiring a lot
more insulin, or the pain has changed my metabolism.  Tomorrow I might
start getting relief--I'm going in for a shot.  I forget what it's
called, but it's used for bulging disk pain.  I've been running my pump
at 120% of normal basal and still have to take corrective boluses a lot.

bummer... sorry to see that happening

yep... exactly how I am when I get a flare.. which I get 2-3x a week.

which is funny because when i'm taking morphine I get the best relief,
doesn't kill the pain just dulls it better. then I can put my basal back to
normal otherwise i'm running at close to 45u a day on pain days... 32u
on non-pain days.

i'm sure its steriods -- its a special type for diabetics... i've had them
done
in my back.. it works a bit, but I still have 3 more to go for the series to
make
it complete. I usually get a hmmm 60-100mg rise for the first 24-36hrs then
starts to go back down.

hope u feel better..

well, 1 surgery kept my problems away for 9 years.  the next surgery
kept them away for 8 years.  Since the current problem is in the same
area as back in '88, I want to avoid surgery and give the injections a
"shot". :)  I'll be going in later this morning.  I'll post the results
of the injection later.  I was warned not to expect much the first day.
In fact, many patients don't get relief until the second shot, usually
scheduled for a couple weeks later.

Dave
Cheri - 28 Oct 2005 18:07 GMT
Best to you Dave. I hope you get relief from the pain through the shots
sooner than later.

Thanks, Cheri.  After an initial problem with a nicked nerve during the
procedure yesterday, I'm getting quite a bit of relief from the arm
pain.  I've been able to go without pain pills for the first time in
over 2 weeks.

The downside is that the injection and the medrol I'm on has made my
insulin practically useless. I stayed up 1/2 the night taking bolus
after bolus.  I increased my basal rate first 22%, then 33, than 60 and
finally 75 percent.  I woke up this morning to a 214.  I took another
10-12 units and waited 2 1/2 hours before I could eat breakfast.  then I
stayed around 100 for a few hours, had lunch and now I'm fighting to get
it below 214 again.  The cortisone in the shot really shoots up a DM's bg's!

I might have to go through this all again in 2 weeks and possibly in
another 4.  sigh.

That is good news. Getting rid of a lot of the pain is always good.

That sounds like a nightmare. It must be hard trying to control your
BG's while trying to control your pain. I've never had cortisone, so
I'll knock on wood with that one. Best to you, and I hope you don't have
to go through it all over.

thanks, Cheri.  I'm limiting my time at the PC because it aggravates my
arm.  Today I feel pretty much like yesterday.  No better; no worse.  My
wife and I discovered a couple minutes ago that it's an hour earlier
than we thought.  I read this morning's paper and didn't notice "turn
back your clock".  DOH!

Dave
Cheri - 30 Oct 2005 22:07 GMT
Yes Dave, it's best not to overdo it with the computer and typing if
it's aggravating the arm. I'm sorry you're not better today, but maybe
just going to take some time. As to the daylight savings time thing, I
set my clocks back Friday night because I have 23 of them in total and
wanted to get a head start on it. I've been totally out of sync since
then. LOL
Hope you feel better tomorrow.

If I added up all the ones around here.. Hmmm... 2 in the vehicles, 4
in the VCR's, 5 in the kitchen, 3 watches, 9 wall clocks, 6 in the
TV's, irrigation, lighting, security 1 each, 4 in telephones, 2
answering machines, 2 travel alarms, That would make 40, and I'm sure
I've forgotten a few.

I'm darn glad I don't live in a state that has Daylight savings time!
That's one silliness I can do without!

damn!  I  forgot the VCR.  our cell phones, thankfully reset to system
time.  answering machine, with a mini tape, has no clock function--yeah.

Cheri - 31 Oct 2005 02:13 GMT
I'm sure if you add all those little ones up, like VCR's, microwave,
stove, wall clocks, knick knack clocks, answering machines, fax
machines, car clocks, stereo clocks etc., you'll come up with a bunch
too Kate. It is one of lifes little annoyances IMO. I hate daylight
savings time. :-)

Holy crap!  I don't need to know what time it is that badly.  My VCR and
computer reset themselves.  I set my meter, alarm clock, micro, oven, and
one tv. I reminded DH to reset his alarm and watch.  I don't think he reset
his meter in April, I know he doesn't ever reset the clock in the truck,
same thing with the answering machine.  Nobody cares if the other VCR
flashes 12, we only use it for watching.  The clock in the car doesn't work,
I gave up trying to keep the little tv set because the electricity blinks
and I just have to do it again.  When I need to wear my watch I set it and
wind it then.  That's 16 and we only mess with 7 of them.

I forgot a few.. 5 meters, and the well control system, for a total of
46.. UGH! I doubt I'd bother with all of them if I had to deal with
Daylight savings time, but it would sure be a hassle.

23?  I think that's approx how many we have to change, too! :)

I wish they'd abolish daylight savings now that most of the civilized
world has dozens of time keeping devices to reset every 6 months.

I just did a quick audit.  have OVER 43 items that need resetting.
pumps, meters, timers for sprinkers and lights, ovens (3), 2 cars,
PDA's, 8 watches...

I think I'll be done resetting them just in time for "spring ahead".

(I've found only 3 devices that adjust automatically: 2 PC's and an
OfficeJet)

Dave
Cheri - 31 Oct 2005 02:08 GMT
Damn, that's a lot, and it's the pits. Some I don't mind as much as
others, but the ones where you have to get a manual out to do it are
just the worst. Big sigh. :-)

We collect clocks. I didn't even bother to count today. The last time
I did which was at least five years ago the total, including VRCs,
etc. was 49. All I know is that I change a few in the morning and then
every hour or so when I am near some of the others I change those too.
It is now nearly 9:00 p.m. and there are still some I haven't gotten
to. The pendulum clocks are the easiest since all I have to do is stop
the pendulum from swinging and go back in an hour or so and restart it
and set it right.

That's my hardest one, because it's hung higher on the wall and it's
heavy, and you have to take the back off since the front doesn't open.

I was lucky tonight I didn't drop our best wall clock due to my bum arm.
Now I've got 6 months before I have to take it down from the wall
for it's next time change.

Then it's not steriod's like i'm getting to help with the inflamation.
I was told, after the lidocaine wore off a few hours later I'd have almost
mild immedate results, if not it wasn't going to take period.  I did get
almost immedate relief... too bad it was at the expense of a glucose high
on top of it.. err.

hope it works for you.

Thanks, Alan.  So far the results are mixed but promising (it's been a
bit over 24 hours since the injection).  the doc said relief might not
come at all from the first shot, or it might take just a few days.  If
the second shot doesn't help (2 weeks later) then we'll have to go to
plan B.

"Nicked" wasn't the right word to use, really.  Because of Dave's
previous 2 fusions, the cervical area is full of scar tissue and the
anatomy isn't clear.  Rather, one of the spinal needles just happened to
stimulate a nerve that runs to the underarm area, and Dave said it felt
like a bee sting, only worse.  But this a.m. he said it wasn't as bad as
it had been yesterday.
