I have learned a lot from the folks in this group, so I am hoping for some guidance on the question of meters. My health plan now partially covers test strip and meter costs. I am using a Prestiege monitor from CVS. Is this a good monitor? I am going to get new test strips tomorrow - and maybe a better monitor if there is one. Any recommendations? Though my insurance now covers a small part of the bill, I am still concerned about the cost of strips. The Prestiege strips are about $25 for 50. Any advice will be apprecited. Most meter manufactures would discount their meters up to 100%, but you do need to buy the stips. The strip is where they make the money from. Therefore, Choose the meter based on what your insurance would cover. I, myself, use the One Touch Ultra because I got the meter and strips for free. However, my insurance limit my terting to 2 times per day. $25 for 50 does not sound too bad. The Ultra served me good except for some concern over the mechanical quality of the strips. The edges are very rough cut and the plastic on top of them is poor. I have found that the Bayer Ascensia contour has better constructed strips and the pickup of blood is very good. Better than the Ultra. The contour takes 15 seconds to read But this is no probl;em for me. It seems to give good readings and seem less prone to error from am inadequate blood pickup. I will probably make it my primary meter. I asked for a meter to try . Seems they have made a good deal with the free meter. If you ask you probably can get a free meter or buy 100 strips and get an included meter. Only suckers pay for the meters. The money is in the strips. Insist on a deal. If any meter is so good they should be glad to provide a test meter since you will use a good one.for a long time. Usually Hocks has some good meter-strip deals. This latest lot (#16) seems to have an odd miter on the absorptive edge so I'm "missing" quite a bit. Or maybe my depth perception is going. Get your sticks from ebay at about 1/2 retail cost. Meters on ebay are dirt cheap. Ebay is the cheapest place for sticks. Hocks, which many have mentioned here has some of the most popular strips for near $32 per 50 I have bought strips from them without any problem. if there is any problem with them it should be posted here. They post deals on meter/strip combo. IN Houston we had a big deal where some medical supply supplied flu vaccine for the inoculation for 1000 employees. It seems it was only sterile water. They hope. ON medical supplies I will not take a chance on unverifiable sources. I am using these deals to check on several meters. I may quit the One Touch Ultra.. . There may be other sites. We do need competition. I think Ted has posted the Hocks site in the past. My post is no recommendation. Find out yourself. I do not use e-bay because some friends have had problems and they are not that cheap now. First call the company and ask for a free trial meter. Nothing to lose there. Simply tell them I would like to try their meter. I tell them of my annual use. Tell them it up to them, I will not pay for a trial. Guy WalMart or CostCo are a lot cheaper here....... Costco? Suggestions? Type in one touch ultra. There is a bunch of OTU sticks available on ebay. See below. Typically, OTU sticks go for $50+ per 100 sticks which I think is outrageous.
