Meters and the VA

At 1500 today the VA will give us an ACC-Chek Advantage meter.  I
copied a google check that compares all the meters which I will take
with me me. The military and most other VA facilities have gotten
Precision Extras long ago.

The Accu-chek takes 40 seconds, range- 20-600 mg/dl, drop size 4ml
   Advantage

The Prec Extra takes 10 seconds,  " 20-600 mg/dl, drop size 1.5ml.

The Accu-chek is not recommended for children because of the time and
amt of blood required.  Does this mean that older men or war veterans
would prefer these disadvantages?

What this is telling me is that the VA got a lot of free meters or very
reasonable ones, I am going just to speak up for veterans
and just for the hell of it I may tell them I would rather keep my old
medisense that takes 30 seconds and buy my own strips.. My insurance
covers meters and strips if it comes to that. I will let you know if I
upset the apple cart.

I love accu-check mostly because of the comfort curve strips.
I have yet to use something easier.
there probably are easier meters but for me the comfort curve strips
make things pretty easy to do.  when I was first dx'd blood was pretty hard
to get out.
now with 1 little pinch I could probably test 5 times.

Tom, the meter I got was not exactly like the specifications I quoted.
Google said 2 penlite batteries, it has a cadium plated battery, test
time is 20 seconds, she made a point of showing me that it took less
blood than what I said.  The funniest part was that we were told to
keep our old lancets etc and got only a meter.  How cheap is that, all
meters come with a full package even the ones you get from the
military.  The precision extra that I got recently takes 10 seconds,
needs 1.5 ml of blood and best of all the strips are wrapped
individually making it very easy to carry 5 or ten in the pocket as I
travel frequently.
The best part was that I got a flu shot(ouch) even though the VA used a
local Naval dispensary to give out these meters.

The Advantage is a royal piece of junk.  It typically reads 20 to30
points higher than any other meter I have.  Other people said the same
thing.  If the VA insists on accu check meters, then go for the
Complete meter.  It is the equivalent of the Lifescan Ultrasmart.  The
Complete measures within a couple points of my freestyle, one touch
ultra, and elite xl meters.  The complete and advantage use the
comfort curve sticks.

I went specificly to get the lancing device and they told us to use our
old ones.  Am I surprised?  No, I have worked for the government all my
life since 1957.  The VA's idea of saving money is to restrict the
number of strips one may receive per month, per day etc. Have you ever
tried to fight city hall, it ain't worth it.  It read 5 points higher
that my old medisense. So much for that subject. Over and out. Time for
a Lake Country red !

If you need more sticks than alloted by the VA, then ebay is the best
choice.

My Flash reads 10-15 points higher than my UltraSmart.  In fact I've
checked THREE Flash units against TWO Ultrasmarts.  I try to remember
the Flash reads higher because I'm so used to the readings from the
UltraSmart.

That is weird.  I find the freestyle is the most consistent meter I
have.  I've only had 2 bottles of sticks for the OTU meter, so I don't
have adequate experience on how the OTU stacks up.  The damn OTU
sticks are so outrageously priced, even on ebay.

I'm not saying it is INCONSISTENT; I'm saying it reads higher than the
US.  when my US reads 59, my Flash reads 75.   Doesn't matter if the
readings are under 100 or over 200, the Flash is nearly always about 15
points higher, but it IS consistent.

Charlie, my friend just got the Precision Extra and I was amazed at the
quickness of it and the small amount of blood needed.  I wish you good
luck.

Loretta, the funny thing is my new endocronologist suggested that I use
an Accu-Check so SHE
can download it.  I've got news for her, I bought the software to
download my new Precision Extra so I will download it prior to my
visit.  I wanted to see the Accu-Chek and ask questions that may have
surprised them, only one other guy asked a question.  I will say good
bye to the VA on Oct 24.

What happened to Guy? He used to post every day.  Have fun next week
!!!

The VA also gave me an Accu-Check meter to use, and it does read much higher
than it should. The VA only wanted me to test once or twice a week and 1 day
out of the month 4 times. Now that I am covered by Medicare, I went back to
my Ascensia Elite XL meter, and can test twice a day now.

Medicare paid for mine "One touch", 5 second and I get my strips from
Liberty, paid by Medicare.  They send me enough for 3 a day and more if I
ask for them.

I hate to complain about the VA but I do have other insurance and if
you have a service connected disability you could always return if you
were unfortunate enough to get on dialysis or something worse.  The VA
treats many people like my neighbor who was in during the Korean
conflict and served two or three years in the Army.  His only 'legal'
source of income is Social Security.
