How critical is this date? I just found several bottles with an
expiration date last month (Sep05). Are these usable?
Was thinking I could use them every other day and if measurements are
out of 'expectation', I could measure again with an unexpired strip.
Anyone ever do this sort of thing?
TIA

is that basic or ultra strips (one is chromatic
and the other is electric resistance)
the key will be how were they stored...... in a
dry, dark place? (inside the vial is a dark
place........ but in the bathroom is NOT a dry
place)
most people 'cheat' for a month past the
expiration date and have reported that the strips
match non-expired strip readings
do check against a non-expired strip to make sure
they are close
just mho

Sounds like a sensible plan to me, especially if they've been stored well.
It's not as if they suddenly turn into pumpkins on the expiration date.

I suspect there is several years of 'safety margin' built into this kind of
stuff.
My opinion,

The strips should be accurate for a few more months. I've found that
when they get close to a year out of date, then they give erroneous
readings. That assumes they were not exposed to extreme heat.

I constantly use expired sticks and find no problems with them. The
meter industry is catching on to our using expired sticks and is
taking action to prevent against such. Roche designed their new accu
chek aviva meter with the expiration date hard wired into the
calibration chip. The meter will not function beyond the expiration
date. I'm afraid it will be the trend of the industry.

Thanks for the inputs.
I would guess they would 'spoil' in one direction, i.e. all read high,
or all read low. Have you that have used expired strips found them to
test wrong in one direction? If not, what did you find, if anything?

we are talking 14 days out of date at the very
most
and i'm assuming that you will use them up in the
next month at very most
i would be surprised if there was any difference
from an 'unexpired test strip'

Tom,
I've had people give me old ones, and I just used some from September
2004 that worked fine. I've started routinely using those that are 1
to 6 months old. I also keep new ones around and use them about every
4th test and whenever anything looks at all odd. It seems like keeping
them in a temperature and humidity controlled environment and away from
light they last quite a long time after the expiration.
