Hi,
I'm off to see a doc in the morning about this and I was wondering what
the collective experience of the people here had to say. Especially with
the knowledge that there are a few side-effects that new users get
which spontaneously vanish after a while.
I started Metformin 500mg/day about four days ago and am getting the
following:
o lower back and side pain
o abdominal discomfort
o general feeling of discomfort
o headaches
Are these some of the common side effects that might magically vanish soon?
Like I said I'm seeing to the doc tomorrow, but I was just curious.
<side note>
This is nothing...give me some Tramadol (esp. SR), wait a few hours and
then tick off every single one of the listed side effects - common, less
common and rare.
</side note>

It's pretty common to have some stomach distress, gas, cramps etc., for
the first couple of weeks, but definitely check with your doc tmw. The
first time I took it a few years ago, I never did get over the side
effects and had to stop taking it, but this time I haven't had a problem
with it. Good luck.

Bastian, is your Metformin the extended-release kind? I understand there
are fewer gastrointestinal problems with Metformin ER. I have a very touchy
GI system, so the doc put me on Met ER right from the start; I never had any
problems. I've also found that my BGs are controlled better with the ER. I
found that out when I got the regular Metformin in error when I had a
prescription filled.

Abdminal discomfort is a mild term for what some get as a side effect.
That is often why you are started on a low(500MGx i low) dose so you get
acclimated gradually. Usually, peole get over this effect after a while.
DSome don't . I had been put on the extended reslease version and it
works bettr for my stomach. No more livign on immodium.
As for the others, I don't know, but suggest y do check with your doctor.

Bastian, I dont remember any of those side effects when I started the
metformin, except for the stomach discomfot which I still have after
four or five years on it.

I've been taking Metformin since early June. Initially I had quite a
bit of lower GI trouble. Once I figured out that I should pad the
stuff with a good portion of carbs most of that trouble went away.
Now I'm just thirsty all the time, but my 30-day average BG was 109,
45-day was 103. I'd rather drink more water than spend more "quality
time" in the bathroom.

Probably just the usual but because of the muscle pain the doc is
testing me for the highly unlikely side effect of lactic acidosis - just
to make sure.
All good.

Sounds like a smart doc on tht. Lactic asidosis is the very, very rag=re
bad side effect from Metformin and in this case should be checked out.
good luck!
