Damn I hate this Accu-Chek meter..... but it's what the VA supports
(figures.... lowest bid purchasing). Two hours after lunch, first reading
145 (damn! shouldn't be), repeated within 30 sec, 103 (now that's better),
checked against my UltraSmart, 95 (thought so).

The Accu-Chek is always higher that the Ultra, but that's unreal. The site
was washed prior to the 145 reading and nothing changed except the strip and
then the meter. Time to call the Roche people, I guess.....

I've got a Medisense Precision Xtra from the V.A. This is the one they
swapped out in January 2004, I think it was. I forget what they'd
issued me before that. Anyway, what I have now is some "institutional"
type of glucometer and it's a stripped down version of what they sell
to the general public.

I sort of calibrated it during a blood test shortly after I got it.
Right, and I mean immediately, after they took my blood test I did a
test on the glucometer and the results of the two tests turned out to
be within 1 or 2 units of each other.

Or the V.A. Surely they have an interest in your readings being
accurate. Maybe they'll issue you a new meter, if that one's no good.

Won't do any good.  The Advantage consistently reads high by 20 - 30
points.  I called them up and bitched many times.  They replaced the
meter twice and still reads high.  I bought the Complete (equivalent
of Ultrasmart) off ebay.  So far it pegs the Elite XL and Freestyle
within ten points.  Problem solved.  I don't like the complete meter
since it is so bulky and heavy.  Just to cumbersome.

I notice whacky readings from my Accu-Chek Active if I haven't washed my
finger and/or have not dried it throughly.  Roche will tell you to clean
the meter and replace the batteries.

I don't know if the VA limitations are just on the meter or extend to
the test strips. If they're willing to buy other kinds of test strips
for you, it's easy to get a free meter from just about any manufacturer.
Just ask! You may have to pay up front, but they'll give you a full rebate.
