ive woken up with a headache in the back of my head and neck for more
than a year. i am a severe nightime clencher, and i do believe that is
at the root of my problem. however, i tried an NTI, prescribed by a
neurologist and i only would wake up in the middle of the night
completely clamped down on it, and would feel my jaw joints moving
back into socket or something after i would take it out. for the next
two weeks i would have the most excruciating headache(like knives
being twisted into my ears). i more than dissapointed, as nothing has
worked for my clenching and headahces. and to make matters worse, it
seems that the 3 TMJ specialists did their exam and couldnt find any
tenderdness of my joint, so no treatment suggested. so although my jaw
hurts and i clench every night there is no relation? These are so-
called specialists. do i just keep searching for a dentist who will
tell me i have tmj and take all of my money? sheesh. one neuro tried
telling me i have transformed migraine and another thinks its from the
clenching. i dont know who to believe.

I'd like to offer a reply if you're still lurking/waiting for one.
I'll

btw this whole thing started after i opened my mouth sideways and
dislocated somethings. since then it pops about weekly and the muscle
in my
post skull and neck and face are constantly in spasm, pinching my jaw
joint. regardless of all of this, the three other "tmj specialists", 2
of them ucla proffessors, see nothing wrong and tried to funnel me to
their pain psychologist. absolutely ridiculous.

Hello,
First, I'm wondering if you would mind cross-posting your thread to
sci.med.dentistry ... There are a number of dentists there whom I
think
would be interested in discussing this with you and smd's readers.
And secondly, since you're seeing dentists associated with UCLA, I'm
assuming you could make a trip to San Diego for an opinion with Dr.
Boyd. Since you've been prescribed an NTI, and you did not find the
results effective, maybe a visit to see him (the inventor) is in order
since he's only a couple hours away from LA.
Hoping to see the thread cross-posted to sci.med.dentistry

BTW, you said a neurologist prescribed the NTI. Who actually made the
NTI and followed your progress with it?
You should realize, if you already don't, that the device should be
reevaluated. What have the "3 TMJ specialists" said about the NTI?
The "3 TMJ specialists" ... what makes them so special anyway?

i have no idea what makes them special, i believe the only criteria
for treating tmj is willingness to accept huge amounts of money for
providing 15 minutes of time. And i got my NTI from Dr. Boyd, whom i
visited three times without actually receiving an exam, and after not
making any progress He decided not to return my emails. And i have yet
to crosspost, so im not sure how do to that. thanks

I didn't read everything in detail, but if you never left the NTI
in for even one whole night, how could you deem it a failure?
Clenching on the device was interupting your clenching on your
natural teeth!
Nobody said getting control of extreme clenching was a piece of cake.
Plus, just because a neurologist prescribed an NTI, all NTI's are
not alike and you may need to experiment a little on vertical
opening, slide bars, etc.
The fact that the NTI changed your symptoms is actually a good
indication that you are on the right track with the clenching
being a large part of your problem.
I don't think I've ever seen a clencher that could not be helped
with an NTI. I have seen a few patients who wouldn't let it
happen.
If you are serious about dealing with your problem, give us a
basic geographical location and we might have a name in mind
for a referral.

I wore the thing for almost three weeks and it only caused the most
painful
stabbing headaches in my ears ive ever felt. id wake up in the middle
of the night
violently clamped down feeling my jaw joints falling back in as i
would wake up.
im a clencher and i had dislocated or injured my right side not too
long before getting the
NTI. Like I said Dr. Boyd made the thing, in fact made 2, and it just
caused me more pain.
i dont know, maybe the thing has healed some and it might work at this
point. but im not sure
i want to risk the excruciating pain that it gave me before. And
these whatever specialists at UCLA have
really had bad things to say about the device.
Steven Fawks - 17 May 2008 05:53 GMT
I've used them exclusively for 8 years or so and have been
very pleased with the results.
That does not mean that anything in life is 100%. However the
NTI is very close with a little work.
If you would have listened to Dr. Boyd, he would have told you
that any change in your symptoms meant that the clenching and the
NTI intervention showed that you were on the right track. You
(and Jim) had just not found the right design combo to make things
better.
For the average case, 15 minutes, a 'standard' NTI and everything
is fixed in no time. For a severe case, it takes weeks and maybe
several NTI combinations to find a system that works. That isn't
a $150-$500 sequence of events. NTI dentists get used to 'shooting
fish in a barrel', but an occassional patient does not fit the
mold.
The 'specialists' that dis the NTI are usually those that would
fit the story of "The Emperor's New Clothes".
Keep working on it and you'll have braces, crowns, and surgery.
That'll help a lot.......or not. :-(
JMO,
Steve Fawks
BTW, bottom posting at 4-5 pages of text is a good way to have your
message missed completely.

I missed it, until I saw Steve's post and went back to check. I don't have
the interest to scroll down more than a short distance looking for a fresh
reply.

I bet the NTI has not had the DE reduced in height and that the patient can
swing his lower cuspid over to hit the DE with little effort.

I'd like to offer a reply if you're still lurking/waiting for one.
I'll
wait to formulate the post until I know that or when you're "here".

btw this whole thing started after i opened my mouth sideways and
dislocated somethings. since then it pops about weekly and the muscle
in my
post skull and neck and face are constantly in spasm, pinching my jaw
joint. regardless of all of this, the three other "tmj specialists", 2
of them ucla proffessors, see nothing wrong and tried to funnel me to
their pain psychologist. absolutely ridiculous.

Hello,
First, I'm wondering if you would mind cross-posting your thread to
sci.med.dentistry ...

And i have yet
to crosspost, so im not sure how do to that. thanks

Could very well be. I don't know how long ago he had Jim make one
and I don't know if it was on the max. or mand.
Change the vertical, check for posterior contacts in excursion, and
use a mand. appliance to lessen the chance for cuspid contact.
Good place to start.
