I'm just curious: is there a system for naming the roots of teeth like
there is for the teeth themselves, or are roots just referred to by
their orientation within the gums?

They are named by their position in the arch (assuming the tooth is
oriented in the mouth correctly)--analogous to the surfaces of the crown
of the tooth--eg: mesiobuccal, distolingual, palatal, buccal etc.
