NY State's requirement goes in this May. We just had ours installed a

Problem is, it's pointed out another problem--if we don't flush through
a high volume of fluid, nothing makes it out the other end. So we did,
and lots of crap came out. Doubt very much is amalgam--there are
filters in the units and on the suction lines anyhow. But I was
startled by how much sludge came out.

I noticed the same thing...most of it is organic slime, some of which used
to get caught in the screen/cup in the suction system....I found that this
screen screen/cup is never full of anything but clear water since the
separator was installed (and cleaning it was probably the most gross job the
assistant had before the installation).
