and my teeth are shifting back to their old position.  After a certain
point will the retainer become useless? or will putting it back on
move my teeth into their proper position?

Stop by your orthodontist with the retainer and get his opinion in person.

    If your teeth have moved significantly it's unlikely that you will be
able to insert it, and it's unwise to try to force it.  You should
return to your orthodontist.
