Fractured Root or Sinus Infection?

I am trying to make appointments with either my internist and/or
dentist, but being so close to the holidays, not much luck so I'm asking
for *general information* whilst I wait for calls:

I'm having absolutely terrible pain in my right cheeckbone, #3 and #5 as
well as #30 and #31. #1, #2 and #4 are absent, and the others mentioned
are all RCTs with gold crowns except #5, which has fillings. #3 has a
very large cast post; #30 has pins. All the crowns were placed this
Spetember. I had a cleaning and examination on Dec 4, which showed
nothing but unusual calcification.

The crowned teeth are sensitive to biting pressure, but not hot/cold.
There is swelling on the right side of my face. I don't have a typical
headache, unless you count my face hurting. Looking in the right
nostril, there's a lot of swelling in there.

Are these symptoms present with a fractured root?

I've had sinus infections that made my teeth hurt quite a bit, but that
was before they were repaired, and they came with a horrible headache,
not just facial pain, so that's why I'm not sure which doctor to see.
And I'm going to go with being in awful pain as an excuse for asking
what is probably (yet another) dumbass question.

Thank you!

Could be a fractured root, failed root canal, or sinus infection.
First question: re: your facial swelling--if you put your finger in
your mouth over where the root tips of #3 and 5 would be, is the
swelling in the gum, in the cheek, or both?  Does it hurt if you press
over the gum next to these teeth?

There is some very slight gum swelling in the upper and lower jaws, and
in the spaces where there once were teeth. It may have been caused by
over-aggressive brushing (the pain started as discomfort that felt as
though a good brushing could alleviate). The gum space around and above
#3 is sore when pressed and very sightly swollen. The entire cheekbone
and eye socket is sore to the slightest touch.

As the pain worsens as the day goes on, I am suspecting sinus infection
but am still trying to get a hold of any doctor!

Thnk you for your response.

I don't think you can rule out dental infection, in which case this is
a significant infection.  Try to find an oral/maxillofacial surgeon.

Good luck,
Steve

I have an appointment in 3 hours with my dentist. I'm keeping my fingers
crossed that it's less serious than it feels (which is awful). Thank you
again.

Fractured root and abcess. #3 has joined #2, #4, #15 and #18 in the
choir celestial, or rather, my sock drawer. If I'd known, I'd have
skipped having it expensively RCT'd, custom posted and gold crowned
three months ago! Well, at least I'm no longer in excruciating pain.

Thanks again for the help.

Sorry to hear this.  It is not unusual for fractures to be only
detected after a root canal.  However, I try not to do an impression for
a crown until the tooth is symptom-free.  If that means a temporary
crown needs to be worn for a few weeks, so be it.
    Glad you're feeling better.
