Colleagues:

You may recall that the recommendations for antibiotic prophylaxis were
considerably curtailed in scope of the indications that require it in
the last revision of the guidelines issued in April.
I have just received news that the UK National Institute for
Clinical Excellence has published its recommendations.  Of greatest
significance to us is that these recommendations completely remove the
recommendation for antibiotic prophylaxis for dental and ENT procedures.
According to the source of the news (Dr. Edward Odell, of the
department of Oral Pathology at Guy's Hospital in London, these
recommendations are still in draft form and are open to comment for a
month, "but
it is likely to adopted pretty much in its current form."
You can see this information, including a PDF of the entire report, at:

These are excellent news. For the past year the dental profession in
the UK was caught between the official guidelines issued by BSAC and a
cadre of cardiologists insisting that the old regime (unsupported by
most available evidence) should be adhered to. The NICE
recommendations should help to dispel any confusion regarding AB
prophylaxis in the UK.

George

More evidence (if any were needed) that there are more attorneys on
this side of the pond.  ;-)

Oh, don't worry Steve. Attorneys will try to get you whatever
guidelines you'll follow.
Patient died from endocarditis? Why didn't you give antibiotics?
Patient died from anaphylaxis? Why did you give antibiotics.
First, shoot all the lawyers.

Regards,
George
