How long can one wait before getting implants crowned?

Hi,
I got my implants put in (2 uppers, #3 and #4) back in February of 07.
I have had little metal caps on there since getting the implants and
everything seems to be fine - in fact I've even had them checked
recently.

The question is, how long can I wait before getting the crowns made?
Is there a time limit on how long before the caps should be taken off
and real crowns put on?

The reason I ask is that I am getting the run around from the dental
school, I may prefer to wait until next semester, or even next
September if there was no problem in doing so. At this point I have
been assigned to a student and I may want to explore my options for
getting the crowns done by faculty instead, which may take quite a
while to get done.

Either that or I have to go with the undergrad student who - although
she was a dentist in India before - has never made / fit crowns for
implants, and I'm a bit skeptical as to whether she will be able to do
them right, especially with the lack of supervision I seem to be
getting at USC.

I probably shouldn't say this publicly (;-)) but implant crowns are
E-Z!!  They are easier than conventional crowns in most cases.
As for how long you can wait, there is no specific limit, but I have
seen gum tissue grow right up over the healing cap so that stage 2
surgery has to be repeated.

Thanks for both comments. Guess I will reconsider letting the student
do them, if she ever calls me back for an appointment or returns my
e-mail. When I was with the graduate program, this all went very
smoothly but now that I've been assigned to this undergrad foreign
student, it's not going so smoothly.
