Snapping turtle teeth

Ever since I got a root canal on a molar (upper left) my teeth
occasionally snap together.  It only happens when I am falling asleep,
never when I am awake, nor asleep...only in between the two states of
consciousness.

It causes me, as you can imagine, to bite my lips or cheeks.  Worse,
I've had to have two teeth capped because of fractures which I assume
was caused by this (I'm not 100% sure because I didn't notice the
fractures when snapping was happening).

I am male and 52 years old.

Any dentists out there ever heard of this?  I've mentioned it to my
dentist (not the one that did the work) and this was the first time
he's heard of it.

Anyone know the cause?  Any "cure"?  Treatment?

I thank you in advance for your attention to this query...

First, it has nothing to do with the root canal.

Teeth wear.  Clenchers and bruxers wear teeth much more.  Edges
of teeth get sharp.  Restorations also wear.  Clenching does not
go away.

I would try an NTI to see if it helped.

This may be out of left field, but are you sure you don't have a
seizure disorder?  They don't happen predictably, but I have only rarely
seen this kind of snapping--in an epileptic.
Mind you--I'm not saying you are epileptic, but there are a variety of
related conditions out there.

....never thought I had one, but I guess it's a possibility...perhaps
I should mention it to my GP the next time I see him.

I always associated it with the root canal because (1) the snapping
only started after I had the root canal; and (2) there were
complications with the root canal and the dentist had to send me to a
specialist to redo it.

But, hey, both you and the other Steve mention seizures and epilepsy,
so I really should check it out.
