As some of you have figured out, I have found a place to help out for a few
weeks while the owner/dentist recuperates. This office is in the middle of
farm-country. A totally different sensation for me to smell cow manure for
a few miles prior to hitting "town". I get to listen to 2 full CD's of
Chamber Music driving up and 2 more driving home. Normally, I get to my
office about when the engine is warmed up.
Demographically, its fun to talk to people who do something other than work
in an office, or work for the "Big Three". About half the folk seem to work
their land while the remainder work in foundries, casting plants, small
businesses, etc. Good, hard working folk. People who are appreciative of
our efforts and don't expect anything *given* to them. A welcome change.
No fluoride in the water. The amount of dental decay is staggering. The
size of restorations are all big. So,,,,,,,,,, I have to scale back on what
restorations are done when, so as to keep things within financial grasp.
Yet, the people still mange to come in for quadrant dentistry.
Here in Suburbia, once initial treatment plans are done, patients go on
indefinite recare/recall and barely ever get any more restorative work done.
The folk in the small town are in need of much more restorative work.
Economics are different there as the dependency on large firms for
employment is not so severe.
This is a good eye-opener for a City-Boy like me.
I have been putting in ten hour days there with 1 RDH, 2 front desk ladies,
1 DA and 2 RDA's and *everyone* is busy all day long. After having things
slow down so much at home, it feels good to work a full day, work hard, and
get lots of good work done. I feel needed again!

Some people would say, "I told you so", but not me.

I assume that rural office is not Cerec equipped. Are you doing your own lab
work back at your own office or are you getting practice doing everything the
old-fashioned way?

A bit of both. With two RDA's, I can get away with prepping the teeth, then
starting another patient while one of the RDA's gets the final impression
and temporary. (I now remember what a temporary is) :-)
Some of the cases, I take the impression back to my office, pour the model,
scan and mill. At least, then the patient only has to wear the temporary
for two days. I may start doing more of that in the next few weeks. If I
still had the Land Rover, I would cart the whole system up there. Harder to
fit everything in the Subaru. I would have to remove the monitor from the
processor unit and lay it down in the bed of the Subaru. I worry about
stuff vibrating loose inside the processor.
