Hi, I am getting an apicoectomy next week above tooth #10.

I was curious about the general healing time for these procedures.  Is it
days or weeks? I know it takes awhile for the bone to grow back (months), but
was wondering how long I should stick to soft foods.

I was also curious what steps I might take to assist this tooth in healing?
Warm salt water rinses, avoid brushing the area...vitamin therapy.

Thanks.

Did an apico on a #10 just last week.

~7 - 10 days for soft tissue healing.
Just don't lift your lip trying to see what the dentist did;
this can tear the sutures out.

As outlined above. Would also suggest completely leaving the site alone
for at least 24 hours.

You can start salt water rinse after 24 hrs. Gently brush the tooth especially
at the gumline but avoid the surgical site. Vitamin C can help some,
IMO general nutrition plays a larger role in healing.

>Thanks.

Just give it time.

Best wishes,

Thanks for your quick response.  Do you know if there is follow-up in general?
I go to the Bahamas in 3 weeks and want to make sure I am good to go.  This
is a big expensive trip and I want to insure I am at my peak  (well as much
as I can be).

Would the dentist suggest antibiotics in most cases?  The dental surgeon and
I had high hopes that after a root canal on #11 the problem would disappear
(already had RCT on 10 prior).

Should I stick to soft foods...and for how long.

I will ask my dentist this but just in case I appreciate your answers, as I
might be a bit preoccupied at the time of my surgery.

Without complications you should feel right as rain in three weeks.

Probably, but this is best left up to the operating surgeon.
IOW it depends what he/she finds during the procedure.

>Should I stick to soft foods...and for how long.

Avoid things like chips, and such that may inadvertently injure the site.
You want those sutures undisturbed for about 5 days.

Have a good time in the Bahamas and avoid tropical storms.

Hi again.
What is IOW?  And you had said I should avoid them...well if I am feeling
right as rain they should avoid me ;)
I will give you an overview of how the procedure went from a patients point
of view, and I will be quite candid as I think this can help a
dentist/surgeon be more effective.
I am very lucky to have the person I have as a surgeon but I am having a hard
time finding a dentist I can really trust.  Do you know how I could find out
about a dentists track record, or how to find a really competent one?  2
years ago I had 4 root canals done in a row in a 2 month period..methinks now,
after the fact that the dentist might have been hunting and pecking.

IOW = in other words
Avoid them tropical depressions ! 8^]] <that's the rain thingy>
BTW didn't mean to imply that your healing <soft tissue> would take 3 weeks.
Initial s/t healing will take from 7 - 14 days. Meant that you should feel
quite normal by the time of your trip.

Thanks, looking forward to that.

How about asking your surgeon who s/he goes to ?
Otherwise ask friends, neighbors, family, etc...
If you know a dental lab tech ask them.

Could be but maybe not, hard to tell from here.
