Hi, I had 8 old fillings taken out and replaced with new ones
(amalgram) more than two weeks ago. in the beginning it hurt so much
to bite i literally could only drink. it's gotten progressively easier
to chew but still hurts if i bite down all the way while chewing. i
can't even eat lettuce. i can only eat things that i can kind of bite
and get mushy to swallow. my dentist did say i had some deep cavities.
how long will it take for the tenderness to subside? he said possibly
around 1-2 weeks.
thanks a lot.

Pain to biting pressure is not a good sign. Momentary pain to cold (1-3
weeks) would be expected for metal restorations.
Have it evaluated in person. Might be too "high", or the pulp tissues may
be compromised.

It may take longer...
Any time you have that many teeth resorted at once, your chances of having
an adverse event increase. Have the dentist check the bite. Where they
white resin type restorations? They seem to take a while longer to lose the
sensitivity... Be on the lookout for unsolicited pain. That is pain
without a stimulus like hot or cold. If the tooth starts to hurt on it's
own, that is a sign of irreversible pulp damage.
Good Luck
