Tonight I had a toothache, so I did some flossing, and that caused the
gums around that tooth to start bleeding.  I think there was some food
stuck between the teeth for probably several days (I remember some
food got stuck around that area several days ago, and I thought I
removed it all with a toothpick, but I guess not...  I also haven't
flossed in a few weeks).  Assuming that the bleeding stops and the
toothache goes away tomorrow, does that mean I don't have to see a
doctor about it?  I know that I really need to floss more frequently.

Get it checked out, you need to know the cause.

Hello,
No floss nor toothpick for period of time, gums bleed when brushed,
use floss or toothpick for few days, gums are firmer, do not bleed
when teeth brushed. We with closely spaced teeth find toothpick
easier.

You need to see a dentist......get a detail check up. Don't denied or
ignore your problem.
