I read somewhere that a good way to prevent or cure gingivitis is to
swish Listerine through your teeth once a day after you floss and brush.
 Is it really that effective?

It has an antiseptic property, but only a weak one.  It shouldn't be
relied on to "cure" anything.  Concentrate on the flossing and brushing.
If antiseptic rinses are needed esp. short term, better ones are
available if necessary (by prescription), but no antiseptic rinses
should be seen as a substitute for meticulous oral hygiene.

Not without professional care.

So are you folks saying that it makes no difference whether one uses
antiseptic mouth wash or not in improving the health of gums?  I was
asking because I had come across an article written by a dentist saying
that using antiseptic mouth wash regularly in addition to flossing and
brushing is crucial in preventing gingivitis.

An article in a peer reviewed journal, or a web-page designed to sell
something?

Not trying to be a smart alec, but it's crucial to brush and
floss.  Antiseptic mouthwash is nice, and I do use it.  I can't
say it's really necessary.

Sometimes patients seem to think a magic rinse exists that will
cure their ills without all of the hard work.  Not so far.

Did the dentist also explain what gingivitis is?  I think that if
we're trying to prevent "something" we should know what that
something is.

Listerine doesn't work.  Peridex does, but it's not available over the
counter.
