I think I have some inflammation under a tooth that had a root canel
done a good while ago.
It was hurting a little a while back and the dentist said there was
not a problem(Did X Rays) and it might be inflammation.
It seems to be the same tooth.
I forget what he said. I want to try it again.
I think it was 800 MG of Ibuprofen, 3 times a day for 3 days. Does
that sound right?
How many hours apart should I take them?
I didn't think it would work, but it worked.
Thanks, Tony

Tony,
The maximum daily limit for Ibuprofen is 3200mg.
Taking 800mg of Ibuprofen 3 times a day is best accomplished every 8
hours.  This will provide the most consistent blood concentration.  Be
sure to drink plenty of fluids when taking Ibuprofen as it can harm
your stomach.
If your symptoms persist, I recommend seeking advice from your
dentist.
Best wishes,
Don

Thanks Don,
I will do that.
The only problem is my dentist usually takes about 2 months to get in.

Pick a different dentist ?
I recently changed from a 1 month guy to a 1 week dentist- not
regretting it in the least (and both are PPO).

Dear Tony,
Tooth aches can be caused by infection. Please consider
asking for antibiotics in the meantime. Consult your dentist or
physician.

Interestingly, in Canada, the maximum daily limit for ibuprofen is 2400mg.

That's because the cold develops a weaker constitution... ;)

But seriously...I didn't know that.  Is the MDD really 2.4g or is that
only what is commonly prescribed/recommended?  I think most people
don't prescribe 800mg every 6 hrs, even in the US.  I remember our
anesthesia instructor told us 600mg q6h provided maximum pain relief
and 800mg q6h gained additional inflammation reduction.  I have never
found a reference for this (and he died shortly after graduation), but
interestingly Merck identifies 800mg q6h for inflammation management
and 400 q6h for pain management.

Here is the reference for Ibuprofen's MDD:
http://www.merck.com/mmpe/lexicomp/ibuprofen.html#NC2DC9
"Inflammatory disease: 400-800 mg/dose 3-4 times/day (maximum dose:
3.2 g/day) "

That sums it up

CPS (Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialities) is a Canadian
publication (mostly proprietary, printed by drug companies) that lists 2.4g
as the max 24hr dose.  The CPS is basically filled with Canadian drug
monographs.

Wierd how so much of our medical treatment philosophy is the same in USA and
Canada, yet we differ on so many things.  You can also get medicinal pot in
Canada, if an MD says you need it.

dose for Ibuprofen is 3200 mg.

When I had a killer tooth ache, I remember taking one or two
every two hours. Talk about consistent blood levels. Every two
hours my tooth ache came back.

50 mg Tramadol (guess who also has a bad back) got me through the
night. Antibiotics took the pain down till I could get to the
dentist.

FWIIW, remember to eat something with the ibuprofen. My understanding
is that it can eat right through the stomach wall ( at least that is
the horror story the nurses tell)

Can't believe everything you hear.  Generally, Ibuprofen is
tolerated better than plain aspirin.

I've taken it on an empty stomach many times with no problems.
(anecdote of course)

I used to be a high dose ibuprofen.  My big problem was blurred vision.
After that, I used it rarely and for special needs.  I haven't touched
the stuff in years. I wasn't aware of having any "stomach" problems from
it.

As with any NSAID, stomach problems are a *possibility*.  I just wanted
to temper the statement about eating a hole right through your stomach.

Quite an exagerated and inflammatory statement.

Best wishes,
D

Gotcha, D.
Hey, how's that broken-wristed-ball-player doing? (Or was it his
hand????)

Best to you too,
W.
Dartos - 22 May 2007 17:51 GMT
He had his first game on Sunday (Ban Johnson summer league).  It was
the first time he was to face 'live' pitching since the injury.  He
was 2 for 4 with a walk, double, and home run (grand slam-wood bat).
He stole one base, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs.  Lots of put outs
at first, and tagged a guy out at the plate during the last inning
when the starting catcher pitched an inning and Ryan moved from
first to catcher.

I think he's back.

:-)
