I have a problem in the 5th teeth (upper jaw) I have had this tooth
done some 5-6 years ago in Europe ... regular filling. I recently
spotted some decay on the top of the tooth + it started aching me
really bad once I drunk some cold liquid. So I went to the dentist
here in US and she suggested the RCL root canal cleaning + crown. Now
I am a little confused.. I always though that you put a crone on the
tooth when it is chipped, broken so that it looks ok. I was thinking
that the root canal cleaning and permanent filling will be enough.
Some people advised me though that if I keep it this way (rcl +
filling) I might break or chip  the tooth some day and it will need to
be extracted ...well my reasoning is the following ..if I break/chip the
tooth someday then I will have that crown done...until then what's the
drawback of not having it done ? The filling is not huge + I already
had several fillings done (including root canal cleaning in a few huge
3 root teeth) and nothing happened - they still there. Crown is
freakin expensive thingy ...pls advise

Some are ok, many are not.  Share an x-ray image and a photo of the tooth
with us, and we can comment.

While I agree with Amatus, most times it is prudent
to place a crown as the final restoration.
Research shows this greatly enhances the success rate
of RCT. <root canal *therapy*>

Are you a foreign student here in the USA?  If you travel back and forth
to your European home, maybe you would want to get your dental care at
home?  Just a thought....
