Its been 6 days now that the left side of my jaw hurts when I open
wide, bite hard or clench. My bite feels off. If I try to bite the
normal way I feel muscle pain located in the cheekbone area. The left
side of my face feels stiff when I open my mouth wide. Before all
this, I had neck cramp/neck pain most likely due to  my sleeping
position & lumpy bed for more than a week. When the neck pain
subsided, a day or two after that, the pain with my left side of jaw
came and hasn't gone away. Are they related? Even though I changed my
sleeping position/bed/pillow the jaw doesn't seem to be getting
better. My four wisdom teeth have been gone years. Please tell me if I
have TMJ or not. Thanks...

TMJ is an acronym for temporal mandibular joint.  That is an anatomical
structure.  Saying you have TMJ is like saying I have knee.  Now,,,,,,,,,,,
you may have a disorder of the TMJ.  No way to tell without a physical exam.
Most people who complain of problems with this joint are really complaining
of problems with the muscles which control this joint.  Most cases resolve
nicely if the muscle spasms are made to go away.  This is NOT a problem with
your teeth shape or position, so rebuilding teeth or orthodontics (which
might be needed for other reasons) will not make a problem of the TMJ
structures go away.

We can discuss normal and abnormal muscle function and its treatment if you
like.

Hey Morgan, usually for me these periods of pain are preceded by
something like a really huge yawn (and maybe a *crunch*) or a visit
to my friendly dentist. It does get better after a while but I use
a muscle relaxant (valium 4mg) before dental appointments to
prevent the muscles from mucking about. Makes the dentist's job
easier too. :-)

I doubt it's the bed or pillows that are to blame, could be pain
referred from the neck though? If it's really painful, a visit to
your GP/PCP wouldn't do any harm. Oh, or you could be clenching in
your sleep.

Anyways, hope you feel better soon!

it could also be CMPD ( chronic myofascial pain disease)  The trigger points
in the neck and shoulder do affect the muscles in the face  BTDT

there are lots of things it *could* be... need to see someone who can
examine you, instead of getting diagnosis' off the internet from complete
strangers

Quite unlikely.

Yes, a real exam is needed.  We don't know anything for sure over the
internet.

However, I've seen several people who went to the wrong place and came
away with ridiculous diagnoses due to very simple, treatable symptoms.
