Alveoloplasty

I had a one quadrant Alveoloplasty done today and also a
gingivoplasty. Were both proceedures necessary? When would make a
gingivoplasty necessary? Both were included in the cost apparently,
but this still seemed awfully expenive to me. The dentist (not a
specialist) said "I always charge $975 but I'll make it $200 for you.
Before the proceedure was done, I mistook (I guess) what he said as
being "he'll charge me $200 and felt relieved. But after the surgery,
his nurse gave me a bill for $775. When I got home afterwards (blown
away by the misunderstanding and the cost (or both) I called an oral
surgeon, several in fact asking prices. One secretary told me usually
around $250 per quadrant, another said from $300-500 depending. I
neglected to mention the gingivoplasty so be an extra charge and come
out about right anyway? Or is the gingivoplasty usually done at no
extra expense?

Thank you so much, looking forward to your response.

We cannot see your mouth.  We do not know EXACTLY what was done.  Sounds
more like you had periodontal surgery.  Do you have teeth?

We need context here--was this done in conjunction with extractions, as
a periodontal procedure, or preliminary to some kind of prosthetic
treatment (dentures, implants, etc.)?

Oral surgeons do not usually do these procedures at least not in the
context you described.
If you want to shop around you need to call a periodontist/gum surgeon
not an oral surgeon.
$775 is more than reasonable for this service. I currently charge
roughly $1200.00/quadrant  for something like this.
I guess they gave you $200 discount from their usual fee and you
mistook the discount as the fee. This typically happens because
statistically it has been proven patients remember 50% of what is
explained to them and that leads to misunderstandings. A  dental
office is a threatening place for patients and it is hard to stay in
tune with everything around you, so this is expected.

Yea we do....

Really? Must be that 'periodontal plastic surgery' thing they like to
refer to these days.....

I just don't hardly even understand the nomenclature anymore.  I can't
tell from either the OP nor Alex exactly what procedure we're talking about.

Steve, confused again.

I was going to say something, but I just decided to let it slide.

I wouldn't usually charge for a gingivoplasty and an alveoloplasty
on the same visit.  The gv would be if I wasn't doing anything
with bone, and the av would encompass whatever I needed to do
to reshape a ridge.

For me, an av is usually associated with removable prosthetics.

A gv might be perio or cosmetic.

How about you Dave?

I would agree and that is how I would handle it too. The majority of
gv I do are related to systemic causes like anti-rejection or siezure
meds or tuning up an implant but I have done my fair share of crown
lengthenings, ct grafts, gtr etc. I bill one or the other if done
simultaneously but both at the same time usually means excess gums
after recontouring the bone.
