I have the newest release of 3.0 software on my machine. It is very nice.
It has a new user and an experienced user module. New users, can make
inlays on it with virtually no design input from a human.
I use mostly ProCad blocks, but find the Vita blocks easy to work with as
well. 3M is coming out with a new ceramic block, and ProCad has adapted
Vita shading for their new blocks.

how much was the software and was it an upgrade. Is it possible to
upgrade to the new milling unit or is it a 'new' purchase?

The new milling unit is a $20K upgrade for existing users (who are part of
the maintenance plan). You get a credit back for returning your old one.
the new milling unit will mill faster and quieter. It has provisions for
future expansion to four milling motors.
The software if free with the maintenance plan. Alone, it would be few $K.
