With tongue in cheek
> does anyone know when teeth whitening first started ?
When Gork discovered that he could chip all that dark stuff off Grotk's
front teeth with a pointy mastodon bone.
> Did the romans clean teeth ?
Every bath-day
> Also who was the first dentist in the world ?
Gork's second cousin Frotak.
> Does anyone know the answers ?
Slightly more seriously, Dental hygiene practices of the ancient Romans can
be determined anthropologically. Various implements have been discovered
among ruins and remains of various pre-historical peoples. Your other
questions are far to vague to be able to answer. If you wanted the name of
the first modern dentist in the USA, or in Europe, what is the oldest tooth
cleansing implement discovered, etc. then there would be a chance of
researching an answer.
Gort, Klatu, etc.

In what movie does the protagonist get in trouble for saying "Klatuu,
Barrada, Necktie" ??? Hint, the actor and director are originally from my
neck of the woods.

You got it. !!
Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are from this neck of the woods. The DA I had
when Newbie visited was in a school play with both of them. I believe she
said she directed the play. Sam actually came to my office to try to get me
to invest in the first movie (Evil Dead), but I was just fresh out of school
and had no money to speculate with. Oh well. . . . .

It is odd that you should bring this up, because I was watching a segment on the
History Channel just the other day that claimed that tooth whitening goes back
hundreds of years.

" Barbers doubled as dental surgeons, mainly for pulling teeth. But they
also whitened teeth. A sparkling smile was a valued thing in those days. It must
have been - the barber-surgeons would file down a patient's teeth with a type of
metal file, then dab them with highly-corrosive nitric acid. Talk about cosmetic
dentistry! This definitely whitened the teeth, but it also destroyed the enamel,
which led to the eventual decaying of the teeth. But the all-important flashing
smile motivated people to continue this acid cleaning into the 18th century."
