Question: Increasing pain after extraction

Hello all,

My wife went in to have a wisdom tooth (bottom left) extracted on
March 8th.  It was a long process as the tooth was rotten and took a
good long time to remove.

Afterwards, the pain was minimal and able to be controlled with
ibuprofen and Vicodin.  She also took an antibiotic for possible
infection.  However, the pain continued to increase in the extraction
area as well as the molar directly in front of the tooth which
apparently was using the wisdom tooth for 'support'.

We went back in on the 14th and this tooth was extracted as well, it
was leaning far to the back of the mouth and causing great
discomfort.  The pain medication was switched to Darvocet and again
pain was minimal and easily controlled.  Another antibiotic was
prescribed (Zithromax)

It has been getting steadily worse every day.  Today my wife has been
unable to do anything at all due to her pain.  Constant ice packs,
medications and taking everything slow and easy has not helped her
mounting discomfort at all.  We intend on seeing our dentist tomorrow,
but were wondering if there is anything we can do now before her
appointment, or even what to expect.

Thank you so much in advance,
-Monte

Typical dry socket--very unpleasant, but not dangerous.  Darvocet is
poor--probably even ibuprofen would be better--up to 600 mg (3 X200 mg
tabs) every 6 hours, may be supplemented by acetaminophen 3 hrs. in
between.  Her dentist should be able to pack the extraction site as
needed, which should give quick and significant relief.
