post wisdom tooth extraction questions

Hi, I had four wisdom teeth taken out 9 days ago.

I'll call my doc to ask this tomorrow, but figured I'd try to get an
answer here today ...

This far out, would I be causing any problems with the healing process
by using some listerine mouth wash?

I've been brushing and flossing my teeth, but staying away from the
back of the mouth where the wounds are. The only attention that area
has been getting is a salt water rinse after eating and before bed.
Would it be safe to swish some listerine back there yet? If not, any
other suggestions for cleaning it? That area of my mouth seems to be
getting pretty funky tasting.

Another question, how long does it typically take for the soreness
from the op to go away? I'm doing pretty good, but still have enough
ache that I'm taking a 200mg ibuprofin every six hours or so to get
rid of it.

One final question ... after a while, is it safe to brush the are
around the extraction holes? I understand that it can take months for
the hole to fully fill in, but how long does it take before there's
enough healing done that I can be a little rough with the area without
worry?

Thanks!

If you're still taking pain meds 9 days later, it's likely you have a
dry socket.  If you're managing then fine, but 9 days of ibuprofen (even
at low doses like you're taking) wouldn't make my stomach happy.  The
pain should be diminishing, but dry socket definitely slows things down.
You will not do any damage with mouthwash at this point, nor will you
by brushing the area.  If you're overdoing it you'll be the first to know.
You should probably have the extraction sites looked at to make sure
there are no dead pieces of bone (sequestrae) in the extraction sites
that could be retarding healing.

Thank you for the reply! Man, just brushing the heck out of the area
and hitting it with some mouthwash made it feel a lot more
comfortable. I talked to the doc and things look like they're healing
up fine. We think the pain I still have is more from my jaw being
stiff after being pried around a lot while the teeth were being
extracted as it was mostly in the muscles/joints more than the actual
extraction sites.

    Thanks for the update.
