Question about Crown

Having just cracked and lost part of a filling, I think it's time for a
crown.

The tooth is my first molar, left upper. I lost about 25% of it, with the
inner surface now chipped. About 1/8 of an inch is visible above the gumline
in that area, with some of the lateral surface fully intact (I had chipped
some of that surface years ago, and my dentist filed it smooth.  This tooth
has extensive filling)

So my question is: How much tooth must be visible above the gumline for a
crown? I've heard that teeth are filed down before a crown is placed, but
have I lost too much surface?  Thanks

I want a couple of bumps sticking up which are at least 3-4 mm in height.
Teeth with root canal treatment can have 4-5mm of vertical wall in the
chamber below the gum-line, providing they have tiny bumps still above the
gum-line.

Other dentists will have different standards of minimally restorable.
