White spot on the gums

Hi

I have a white spot on my gums. I am not sure what it is. I first
noticed it one week ago when my tongue felt a slightly raised patch. I
am not sure how long it has been there, but I guess about a week if my
tongue is a good sensor for picking these sorts of things up. It does
not hurt unless I press it with a finger.

An image is here: http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/3887/whitespotlg5.jpg

As the image shows, there is a slight redness surrounding the white
spot.

I have no dental problems though my teeth are a bit wonky. I've just
recovered from a flu-like illness (temperature, dry cough, feeling
weak) which took me 4/5 days to get over - whether this is linked to
the white spot I don't know. I am a 28 year old male in good health.

My question is what is this spot likely to be ?

Many thanks in advance.

Good picture.

Well, the technical term for this is leukoplakia.
A generic term that means white spot, not really a diagnosis.

If it doesn't resolve within 10 to 14 days get it checked.

It's probably just a toothbrush injury.

It looks like an aphthous ulcer (canker sore).  I cannot rule out a gum
boil related to the tooth below, but that wouldn't be my guess.
    Wadaya mean, "wonky"?

Those respond very nicely to treatment with a laser.

Thank you all for your replies. It's good to know it's unlikely to be
anything more than a sore. By wonky I meant crooked, as in slightly
Austin Powers-like. I am from the UK after all ;-)
