root canal

Hi, I have had root canal procedures twice on one tooth over the past
two years. I only had temporary filling both the times. The last time
I lost the temporary filling was about 18 months ago and the tooth has
been open ever since. Now I am having pain and not sure whether it is
because this open tooth or any other tooth. Do you think I need the
root canal procedure again for the same tooth?

If I see a dentist and if he thinks I need the root canal procedure
again on the same tooth, should I always belive him? What if he is
trying to sell the procedure just to make more money?

Please help me with these two questions.

Thanks.

If you aren't going to restore the teeth properly, you may as well just
have them extracted.  Many studies show that an unrestored root
canal-treated tooth will leak and eventually reinfect the periapex.

Yep that is indeed the case.
No crown = extremely high probability of RCT failure.

Thanks for your reply, Steven.

I am going to get it restored permanently this time. I need this tooth
because I have been eating on one side of my mouth for last 2 years:)
I am a slow eater because of it and I get tired too quickly while
eating.

What do you think is the best thing to do?

If this is a tooth worth saving (important either for chewing and/or
esthetics), and reasonably sound periodontally, and the infection can be
cleared up, it will almost certainly need a crown afterwards.  Your
dentist should be in a position to tell you how likely treatment is to
be successful.  After that, it's your decision.

Good luck,
Steve

Yep.

Can't tell over the net.  Might not be *sure* in person!

A second retreat is not the greatest, but it might work.  I would
clean, disinfect, place calcium hydroxide, re-clean, replace
calcium hydroxide, and then (assuming things feel fine) do a
final clean/disinfect, and seal (waiting several weeks between
all steps).

Perhaps see an endodontist and then get the crown quickly.
