hello.  about 8 years ago i saw a specialist who told me that i needed
surgery because my jaw joint was not right.  i was getting infections
and every now and then when i would yawn widely enough, my jaw would
"pop" and i would get some serious pain.  i opted not to get the
surgery.

now years later i have been getting some serious ear discomfort.  this
has been going on for about three months, now.  mostly a feeling of
"fullness" or "stuffiness" in one of my ears.  it will go away for a
bit but then come back.  in my other ear i have a ringing, which i
guess is tinnitus.  this ringing is relatively new.  it is most
annoying when i am trying to go to sleep.  i have seen a number of ear
specialists and have been told that "there is a problem" but they do
not know what the problem is.  i have been told it could be a sinus
infection or it could be a throat infection.  i was also told my
adenoids were enlarged by a doctor or two.  but it does not look like
my ears are infected.

could these symptoms be signs of a tmj issue?  i assume my jaw did not
heal by itself and it does still bother me from time to time.  i have
been given many other alternatives for my very annoying and
distracting symptoms, but could it be a jaw problen?  thank you for
any input on this matter in advance.  i appreciate it.

Overall, I would say not having the surgery was a good decision.
Some works, but some has very severe negative results.

My recommendation would be to try an NTI device (since you have
already ruled out other medical issues). <www.HeadachePrevention.com>

It is marketed heavily for migraine and other headache relief, but
I find it very effective for TMJ issues as well.

It sounds to simple too be true, but it is an amazing device.

Your post has piqued my curiosity.  I'd like to ask you some questions
in hopes of discovering how it is you nearly had jaw joint (related)
surgery.  I have a special interest in this subject.

1.  What type of specialist told you that your "jaw joint was not right"?

2.  What was infected ("getting infections")?

3.  What was the surgery that was recommended?  And did the "specialist"
you mention refer you to a particular type of surgeon who recommended
this or was the "specialist" you've mentioned the same person who
recommended the surgery?

4.  What was the surgery supposed to treat?

5.  Did you ask your "ear specialists" (ENT?) suggest that you might
have a "tmj issue"?

6.  Have you gone back to the "specialist" (from eight years ago) who
told you that you "needed surgery"?  If so, what is his/her opinion at
this point?

7.  Were you given a name (diagnosis) for what was wrong with your jaw
eight years ago?  Do you have a specific condition/problem that you're
thinking possibly healed "by itself"?  (This is very important to know.)

I think you'll get some quality information from this newsgroup's
posters; but, of course, you will end up getting care and treatment from
people in the non-cyberworld.  So what you learn here should be mostly
about giving you food for thought as you make your way to finding some
relief from this problem you're experiencing.

Good luck to you,

Oops... my typo.

5. Did your "ear specialists" suggest that you might have a "tmj issue"?

Unfortunately, not a lot is understood about tinnitus.  I have
Meniere's Disease.  It took my ENT two full months to run tests and
determine the cause of my tinnitus.  I do think, tho, that TMJ
exacerbates tinnitus.  Very often, an ENT cannot ever find the cause
of the tinnitus.  I'd go with the people here who've said you should
try this NTI device and see if it helps relieve the tinnitus.  It is
distracting and difficult to sleep when your ears are screaming at
you.  I am no expert -- just somebody else with the same problems.
I'm hoping my dentist can fix the night guard I already have.  If that
doesn't work, I'm going to check out this NTI device.  It looks nice
and small -- not a huge contraption.  Just don't be discouraged if
your ENT says he can't find the cause of the tinnitus.  Many of these
docs tend to say that you just have to "learn to live with it."  What
tests did your ENT do on you?  The fullness in your ears leads me to
think the problem starts right there.  But the jaw problems can
definitely make it worse.  Good luck!

Kind of like trying to fix a Yugo or an Edsel.

If he would just add an anterior discluding element....

(That's how the NTI was developed.  It was an addition to
a standard nightguard.  Then the inventor figured out that
the rest of the guard was superfluous.)
