Hi I need some serious help. I'm a 25 year old female that has severe bad
breath. It smells and taste like sulphur. I don't know what to do- 10 years
ago I was diagnosed with recurring tumors in my gums. I have had them removed
4 times and haven't had a problem for about 6 years. Unfortunately the space
on the left of my fourth upper tooth on the top bleeds when i brush and is
emitting this awful smell. I carry a toothbrush, mints, gum even mouth wash-
nothing helps for more than ten minutes. This may sound trivial considering
that I am not dying but it is a huge problem. I cannot get intimate with
anyone or have close friends. I just graduated from college with a masters
but i can't even get close enough to anyone to form a relationship. Men ask
me out I have to say no. I cannot function in society. I am a recluse, this
is awful. No dentist has been able to help me. Can anyone out there help me?

You probably have acute ulcerative gingivitis, a gram neg organism ,smells
like mouse pee.,diagnosed on the limited info available ,you need
metronidazole antibiotic 200mg tds for 1 week, with covering chlorhexidene
gluconate mouthwash plus superb oral hygene, flossing brushing even with the
bleeding.

WoW ! An internet diagnosis without ever seeing the patient.

Surprised you didn't recommend swishing and then swallowing
some Jim Beam bourbon whiskey.

It was every bit as hard as my canadian club"

i just want to write you and thank you for your help. I have been battling
this problem for so long..I had given up at the thought of being able to be
close to people and I was starting to think that I was going crazy. My
parents live near UAB ( which is home to one of the top dental schools in the
country). I went in and explained my problem and found a resident that found
that I had a very severe ( chronic) bacterial infection. The infections is so
bad that he is going to remove my bone graft from my bone marrow transplan, &
clean out the infection, which could have been there for years! He said that
this might help him to save a tooth ( unsure) but I am on a very large dosage
of penicillin and I am having a biopsy on thursday. I never would have had
the courage to get help ( no dmd ever saw a problem) if you had not
encouraged me. Thank you. I feel like you saved my life.

It could eminate from your stomach.  Maybe there is sulfur-producing
bacteria in your stomach, and they are producing these products.  Try
eating a vegetarian diet and reduce meat consumption.

Brush your tongue with a tongue brush.  Sometimes bacteria hiding in
the tongue can cause the odor.

If as you claim it is associated with a tooth or gum problem, that
means you have an infection of the tooth or gums.  Have it checked out
with a gum specialist.

Flossing may help.  If you get food stuck between your teeth, the food
will rot and will emit a bad smell.  Same thing if food gets stuck
below the gum line.  Try flossing all of your teeth and smelling the
floss after each tooth that you floss.  If you smell the same smell,
it could be due to the rotting gunk between your teeth.  Brush your
teeth, then after brushing, floss, and see if you pick up any bad
smell on the floss.  If so, the brushing does not get rid of the bad
smell between your teeth.  How to get rid of it?  Dip the floss with
an anti-septic like Listerine, and then floss your teeth, so that the
listerine kills the bacteria between the teeth.  Remember that any
food that you can floss out between your teeth is potentially a source
of the sulphurous odor.

Do some research on what food contain sulfur.  Avoid eating these
foods.

A dentist can use an ultrasonic cleaner called a "cavitron" to blow
away any bacteria under the gum line of that "fourth upper tooth."  It
might also need a root canal, if it happens to be infected.  Get a
cleaning every 3-6 months, and see if your breath seems better after a
cavitron cleaning below the gum line.

It might also be an acute gum infection called ANUG, or
"trenchmouth."  This would require a one week prescription of
metronidazole or flagyl.
