I have had a root canal and a crown put on after.  The crown is now 10yrs. or
so old and has chipped.  I went to the dentist and he said I could wear the
crown as long as I would like because its not effectting anything.  However,
it has come off now a couple of times and I am having them put it on now a
couple of times.  I can't afford a new crown, I have no insurance and can't
afford it anytime within the near future.   Is there anything else that can
be done so that I can elimate the crown all together.  I don't mind not
having one as it is a back bottom tooth.  If you could let me know as I am
going today once again to have it glued back on.

Thank you

I see no alternative to redoing the crown, or recementing it if you
plan on keeping the tooth.

Sounds like the porcelain is chipping away from the underlying metal
casting of a porcelain fused to metal crown.  As long as the metal
portion fits the tooth, it isn't a big deal to have some porcelain
missing.

However, since it has been coming off, something could be wrong with
the fit.

Leaving the crown off will allow the tooth to move, might expose some
of the root canal filling to contamination, and could lead to extra
treatment or loss of the tooth.
