Hi, on Boxing day I got one of my top-back teeth taken out. Afterwards it was bleeding like all do, and still bleeding a little the next day. Now, where the tooth was taken out - there was like a big spot there, maybe full of blood I dont know. But I've been getting a horrible taste in my mouth from it. Its been fine, not painfull, only when I touch it, just bad-breath and worrying about what it was. Now tonight, its gone down a bit,the spot, but I can feel bone(maybe tooth dunno). Its not painfull but I can feel something happening, as though its going to get painful. Trouble is, its a emergency dentist who done it. I spoke on the phone the other day about it, explaining the bad taste and the "spot" where it was taken out, but she said she cant see me unless its hurting. Is this dry-socket? I checked > today that they were open tomorrow/Monday and they are. Usually if you have a dry socket, it hurts--a lot. Leave it alone. If there is any pus draining, call the dentist. In any case, while I've seen dry socket after upper molar extractions, it's relatively rare compared to lower molar extractions. Steve Hurting all last night couldnt get to sleep - but not hurting now. I can feel something but only painful when I touch around that area. 5-full-days tonight since the extraction - get past tonight should I be alright? Just dont understand when I feel bone/tooth there if theres nothing wrong with it. Stephen PS. Rinsed my mouth out before with the salt-water thing, around the tooth where it came out, there is this black thing hanging off - maybe blood? It is possible to pack the socket with a medicated dressing and get significant relief. Dry socket isn't dangerous, just a big PIA (or rather mouth). Feel better, Steve Its not hurting - but where I got the tooth out, there is now a soft black spot. What is that do you think? Where the tooth came out - a soft blob of something which tastes horrible. I cant just get rid of it cause it might make the pain go very bad. Above that is the small-black spot. Its not hurting constantly ONLY when I try drinking/eating. Am going to try http://www.rlbuht.nhs.uk/content/default.asp?web=234&sub=549 in the morning, hopefully they will take a look at it and tell me whether its anything to worry about or not. First of all I explained it all. Then he took a look, used the syringe thing with water. worst pain in my mouth I'd ever had. Then sent me for X-Ray to check for tooth/bone there. Came back, and he said must be bone and its normal for this to happen, and expect a few Weeks for it to heal. He then put some stuff that looks like tobacco and tastes like clover oil(But a nice clover oil taste!) into the hole. He said to wash my mouth out reguarly and it wont hurt, and it will take up to 3 weeks to heal. It wasnt exactly hurting when I went, until he cleaned the hole out, he said "what did you put in that hole" I said nothing of course. So maybe that was stopping it from hurting and now all the pain will start? I hope not, it has been 7-days since I got it taken out. Can you have a big hole and not a dry-socket? He never actually told me what I had. Anyway I've booked an appointment for tonight with my GP and will ask for anti-biotics and painkillers just to be safe. Does everyone who gets a big-back tooth out have a big hole for a while? Is it normal to have that and never get dry-socket? PLEASE REPLY! Stephen > Need to get it seen to by somebody. Sounds like he's treating you for a dry socket, which generally is packed with a medicated dressing. Is it normal to have that and never get dry-socket? Most extractions do NOT lead to dry socket, whether closed or not. Your apparent situation--a dry socket on an upper molar is less common (lucky you!) but certainly not rare. I'm not aware of any studies demonstrating that tightly sutured extractions are less likely to develop a dry socket. In any case, it is often not possible to close an upper molar extraction so that there is no hole. It will certainly heal in time. Meanwhile, it sounds as if your surgeon is doing what he has to to make you comfortable. My mum and dad both have them, and they never complain of toothache. Anyway, since the clover oil stuff came out yesterday, 24hrs ago, I've had no pain whatsoever. Its difficult to eat/drink because I can feel the hole, everytime I try and swallow. Like its sucking my cheek if you know what I mean. But not painful! I got Amoxycillen, 250mg of my GP last night. And its now 8 days since I got the tooth out - the hole is still massive, but its starting to go soft. Does this mean its healing and I never had or going to get Dry Socket? Maybe the dentist just gave the clover oil tobacco just to shut me up, I hope thats the case. I looked at storys online, and some people say you arent safe from Dry-Socket until 10-14 days after. Eaten only one thing today - sausage roll, but I dont think any of it touched the hole. I never stopped my coffee or at that time I was drinking sodas and all kinds of things. I ate normal the following day for one extraction. Unfortunately for me I had to have a whole bunch removed the same day and an upper denture and a bridge put in after the teeth was removed. While there could be the odd fragment of bone that will sequester off and come out, I would not call this a dry socket. It sounds as though the patient has gotten the needed treatment from his doctor, and while the healing may be slightly delayed it sounds like he is on his way. I see no cause for special precautions at this point. If pain resumes or the patient notices loose bone fragments he should return to his surgeon for treatment, which should be no big deal. I'm still taking, Ibrufon/Paracetamol and Amoxycillen. Last night, where it was taken out, it started hurting just suddenly, very badly. But it went after taking 600mg Ibrufon and washing mouth out with saltwater. I havent had any proper pain since. There is a sharp piece of bone from where it was taken out, and it doesnt seem to be getting any better. How long should this take to heal, as its really putting me off eating/drinking. I'll try and describe it all best I can: Where it was taken out - the hole is mostly covered. When I put my tounge there, it feels like 2 round soft balls - that mean its healing? Next to there though, in the gums, there is still a sharp piece of bone sticking out which is very painful to touch. I still get the odd bit of pain, when it happens the hole hurts, the teeth around it, plus my eye, face and ear at the same time. But when I think about that, I've been getting sudden-pains in the right side of my face/head for a while before I even got the tooth out. It never lasts too long but is VERY painful when it starts. But, at the moment, its definetly alot better than it was last week. Am taking Ibrufon/Paracetemol several times a day. If I had Dry-Socket or any other bad illness niether of those would make a difference - is that true? It doesn't sound like 'normal' healing after an extraction, but improvement is a good sign. It is impossible to diagnose everything over the internet, but the bone sliver should be removed. The 'round soft balls' could be a sign of infection or granulomatous tissue. That needs to be evaluated when the bone sliver is treated (usually a very minor procedure). JME, D > Its now been 16 days since I got it out. I'm not a dentist so you know but have too much experience with this scenario. Yes, I would think you would be safe but the dentist here should be able to tell you better than I am. Also, the bad taste I found normal. Try not to stick your tongue in there or suck your cheek, it's something I used to do. I only have 5 teeth now do to absorption issue with crohn's and only one I have molar left, is in the back on the bottom. Try to eat though so you don't get sick especially with with Ibuprofen which can tear you up. Just remember to eat on the other side, which is something you are going to have to consciously remind yourself. Again, don't worry if bone comes up through the hole, I was told this is normal.
