I recently had my wisdom teeth out and shortly after (~1 week) I had
developed dry sockets in my lower jaw. They packed it with dressing
twice, and now just this morning I had the second dressing removed. But
now, my jaw is hurting again, but not really radiating. Does anyone
know is this is normal? Or should I go back to the oral surgeon?
Thanks,
Nick

It is normal, unfortunately. It can take several "packings" for pain
relief, but the time it takes to heal is still the same (anywhere from
3 to 6 weeks).

We generally pack the socket three times.
If it still hurts get it packed again.

How do you know what you have is dry socket vs normal healing and pain
after wisdom tooth extraction???
pain can last 2-3 weeks during normal healing of wisom tooth extraction
site. Especially lower jaw.

I guess I have to consider myself extremely fortunate. I had my lower
right wisdom out last Friday morning and only needed advil for the very
minor pain afterwards. Pain was completely gone by Monday morning and
the only problem IMO was a suture that 'fell' out rather early
(Tuesday). I no doubt somehow disloged it in my sleep but since it
didn't bleed I didn't bother with it and so far so good. I've heard
horror stories about dry sockets and was really praying I didn't end up
with one. My surgeon told me that one of the primary causes was
smoking after surgery however I broke down and smoked anyway, carefully
if that's actually possible.
