Are These Fees Too High?

I realize every case is a bit different but does this fee sound very high? I
had intended to get a lot of work done-replace crowns, bridges etc but while
figuring out with the dentist(new) the best way of going it about it I
thought I would have him do 1 tooth which needs immediate attention. This
would have no effect on the other work so I thought he could get started.
It's an upper central incisor that had a small post and crown that had come
out. His job would be to clean out any decay, insert another post and place
a temporary crown which would later be replaced by a permanent one when we
decided on things like matching shade etc when the others were removed and
recrowned. Anyway when discussing price he said that the post and core
buildup would be $500. and a permanent crown $1450. Let's assume they are
both high gold core. Isn't this a high price?

For me in rustic Brooklyn this is very high.  For Dr. Fancypants on W.
57th Street this is a pretty normal fee.

I don't even think there the fees would be as high. I'm from a very wealthy
area,Greenwich, and this would be high. BTW, where I am now is a good area
but it's nothing like before and I'd have to say that his expenses would
have to be 1/4 of what a 5th Ave dentist's would be so I find it all very
perculiar. I went to another dentist in the same area who I know is among
the top implant surgeons and these things like crowns etc (done by another
dentist in the office)  are like $900 apiece. So I guess I won't be using
this guy. And no his office isn't even close to being a Dr. Fancypants and
is in fact a bit dowdy and unkept. I only went to him because he's been
around a long time but perhaps the guy is too old. I think I'll choose a guy
about 40 because at that age he's experienced but is still young and fit
enough to concentrate on the work.

I can assure you that $1400 for a crown in Manhattan is not unusual at
all, and $900 is on the low side for Brooklyn.  Of course managed care
fees are less.

How much is it in Brooklyn? Brooklyn is lower than Manhattan of course, but
it is still a high priced area compared to most of the US.

No. I pay cash and should actually get a discount. No paperwork. Dental
insurance is all a waste of time the way it's set up at the moment with the
yearly limits, co-insurance, limits on what they pay per procedure  etc Then
you have to find a dentist who accepts your plan and perhaps wait a long
time for an appointment especially if he's good and in demand. And in the
end what do you save? Very little and it's not worth the time and
aggravation. When you pay cash you get an immediate appointment and he'll
get the work done very fast. If I need $20k worth of treatment for example
the most I'd save with some sort of plan would be a few thousand and I'd
have to go through a lot of inconvenience and waste of time.

You have to ask yourself do you just want a painting or a Picasso???
If you believe your dentist is really good, gentle, caring and stands
behind his/her work then the price is right and worth it. On the other
hand if you do not care who does the work and are looking for a bargan,
i'm sure you can get that done for a little less, however going
shopping for prices when it comes to irreversible procedures such as
dentistry is very damaging to the health of your teeth. If you were
getting plastic surgery done would you get it done by Michael Jackson's
Plastic surgeon or DR 90210??? Which one is expensive??? maybe both,
90210 might be better but he is into his tv career what do you want out
of your surgeon???? Can you find a surgeon better and cheaper than both
of these surgeons..sure are you going to be the guinie pig to find
one???? If this dentist came to you highly recommended and your friends
that referred you to him/her speak highly of this dentist then chances
are you are in good hands, to save $300-400 on an unknown is a big
risk, because if you pick the wrong dentist and the work needs to be
redone you will spend more than double on your teeth. So you think
about it and ask yourself if the price and the value is right.

Isn't Dr. Fancypants in partnership with Dr. Poofyshirt ?

Kramer is Dr. Fancypants ?!  Who knew !?!

Good one Steve, I knew you would get it.

In august I had a porcelain crown ($1089.00) a cast post and core ($442.00)
and root canal therapy ($995.00) on tooth 30. I live in Washington, DC and
my dentist is far from Dr. Fancy Pants with a modest office and only one
girl to answer phones on the east side of Capitol Hill. I thought that was
way too much, but I also have insurance and this is right in line with what
is paid in this area.

I really wanted to have it pulled for I think about $250 or so but I was
talked out of it.

why would you consider to have an amputation of an important tooth if
you can avoid it????

Because so much is ground down anyway there is no tooth remaining, just
enough to cement a crown too.

Ah, but you still have the root!  Think of the tooth as like an
iceberg--most of it below the surface.
