Wisdom Teeth

Hi,

A friend had 4 wisdom teeth extracted Friday morning.  She still has
pain for which she is taking Tylenol.  Also, she said another tooth
hurt during the night but then stopped.  She doesn't seem to have
swelling on the outside of her face; I don't know about inside.  Could
this be dry socket or some other problem?

Thanks in advance.

If the pain is controlled with Tylenol, I doubt it's dry socket.
Extraction of 4 wisdom teeth is a traumatic procedure and there might
be some post-operative pain for a while. If there's anything serious,
it is worth checking with her dentist.

Thanks for your response, George.  How long can it take for the pain to
subside?  It seems the pain is bearable in that she is functional with
the tylenol, but not perfect.  She had two top teeth which weren't
impacted removed and two bottom ones which were.

Look forward to your response.

If she had real dry socket tylenol wouldn't even touch it. Difficult to
say how long the pain will last; everyone is different. When I had mine
taken out I had discomfort for at least a week.

I suggest that you contact the dentist or oral surgeon who did the
extractions so that dry socket can be diagnosed or ruled out.
Postextraction care is typically provided at no additional charge, at
least in the area of the country where I practice!  Sometimes it takes
a quick visit, sometimes just a phone call, to find out what pain
control regimen will make the most sense for a given situation.

Hi,

Thanks so much for your responses.  My friend spoke to her dentist who
said what she was feeling was normal.  Today she is actually feeling
better.
