8 days ago I was prepared for a crown in a lower molar (2nd from the
back). From the time the novacaine wore off until now, the tooth has
been aching and the gums on the inside of my mouth below the crown have
been incredibly sore (originally purple on the edge near the tooth,
gums were white and red, almost like canker sores, immediately adjacent
to the temporary. The redness extends the gumline to my back molar.
The purple has now diminished but the white sores and redness continue.
The gums on the outside are just fine.
I have been back to the dentist twice since and she says she has never
seen this kind of reaction. The first time she made a minor adjustment
to the temporary (to address the aching tooth) and numbed me again so
she could clean it thinking that perhaps something had gotten under the
gum and was irritating it. This didn't improve the situation. The next
time (3 days ago) she said she wanted to wait another day to see if it
improved as it looked like it may have improved slightly. I'm supposed
to go back today (and by the way, it has not improved).
Since she is stumped, I am not hopeful that today's will be able to
resolve the situation. She thinks that if it was an allergic reaction
that it would have happened all the way around the tooth instead of on
the inside gum only Can anyone weigh in on this with a possible
cause. I'm really in pain.

Tough to say from here. It is possible the pulp is in trouble, but
then it might be the temporary.
What I would do is get the permanent crown on there, using temporary
cement. If it's the temporary crown that has caused the problem it
should improve, and the crown can then be cemented permanently. If the
pain doesn't improve I'd consider the possibility that the tooth may
need a root canal treatment.
