Hi,

As I write this I am in pain. I have been switching between excedrin, aleeve
and advil about every 5 hours.  I had the second part of my root canal
yesterday, which completed the procedure that was started a little over a
week ago.

Prior to having the root canal i was in such terrible pain from what turned
out to be an abcess under the tooth. I did antibiotics for a week and then
had the root canal. The tooth was cracked so this is what the dentist
recommended, and I will get the post and crown after the first of the year
when I have more insurance and can add more money into my healthcare
reimbursement account.

Anyway, as I was saying I had the second part of the root canal yesterday
where he removed the temp medicine filling and cleaned out the canals and
then filled them back in and out in another temp filling. I have been in
pain since the novacaine wore off and tonight my jaw is swollen to the size
of a golf ball right in the area of the tooth. It is the lower right front
molar.

Is this another abcess? Is the temp filling just pinching the gum?  It feels
like one of those little needle looking things he cleaned the canals out
with is stuck in the canal still. I can put no pressure at all on the tooth.
I can masage the gum line with my fingers and that feels good and i can
massage the sides of the tooth and thaats ok. Just no downward pressure. The
tooth in front and behing the tooth that hurts are sensitive now too.

Sorry this is so long but I am 45. Have taken care of my teeth and in the
last 5 years they seem to have gone to hell. Once the dentist fixes one
thing something else happens. I am on my 4th or 5th crown and 3rd root canal
with hin. I am wondering if he is the problem at this point.

Thanks for any insight or advice.

The swelling suggests infection.  This doesn't mean the root canal has
failed at this point.  It's likely that some infected material was
pushed through the tip of the root into the surrounding tissues.  Call
your dentist--antibiotics should help at this point.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I will be seein the dentist this afternoon
and I would imagine he will give me a RX for an antibiotic.
