I got a crown in my far back bottom tooth 8 days ago. The crown was
put in because I had a big old metal filling in this tooth and just
decided it was time. My dentist did not encourage (nor discourage)
this procedure - initially he planned to replace just the filling, but
when he noticed a crack he suggested a crown. I agreed, knowing I
didn't want to just have to come back and get a crown later - I figured
I was already numb.
Anyway, once the novacaine wore off, my tooth was sore that evening and
for the remainder of the week. It seemed to only hurt when I put
pressure on it (eating or pressing down with my finger). I went back
to the dentist after 1 week and he said it was likely set too high and
filed it down a bit while checking my bite. That day I came home to
much more severe pain. Advil eliminated the pain entirely, but I can't
help but wonder if this is a sign of something more severe. My doc
said the chances of it being more serious were very small, but he said
to call in a few days if it's not better.
I'm still waiting to see if the pain subsides but last night I woke up
with fairly severe pain in my entire jaw, no longer just this tooth.
Again, Advil eliminated the pain completely. Now today I haven't had
any Advil in about 8 hours, and I feel a very mild ache in this part of
my mouth. I certainly can't chew on this side though.
Do I get a 2nd opinion or continue to wait, assuming the nerve may just
be inflamed? This is my 4th crown over time, but I never had any
lingering pain with the others (same dentist for all).

Depends on the severity of the symptoms, and the trend in terms of
nature and magnitude. Just listening to your description sounds like a
pulp in trouble--that a root canal treatment may be necessary. It's
tough to say that a second opinion is going to tell you much now--some
dentists will jump to do that root canal sooner than others. If the
bite has been checked, I'd say from your description I can't be
optimistic about the pulp. So the decision is to a certain extent your
tolerance for continued pain until the situation becomes clearer.

i had a similar problem and it turned out that the crown just did not
fit properly...the margins between the bottom of the crown and the gum
tissue needed to be raised, and also the margins between the crown and
the neighboring teeth were off slightly.
with a properly fitted crown, my pain went away.
