Hey I was just wondering if someone could explain something to me. Yesterday
I was brushing my teeth with my electric toothbrush when i rinsed with water
my front crown fell off. What is disturbing me is that i think my original my
tooth fell off with the crown. the area on my gum looks black almost rotten
looking. i do not know if its normal. but the window left by the fallen crown
when i smile lacks the grinded teeth. My dentist said he could see me on
monday. I only had this crown for less than 2 years. does this make me a
candidate for dental implants which is my biggest fear. my four front teeth
are crowns only one fell off should i also be concerned about the health of
the others whose fault is this. is this aresult of overgrinding of the
original tooth by my dentist. he has always been a jerk to me always very
facecious in a very condescending manner. But i do not know what other option
i have I am so broke right now. so im going back with the hope that hell take
care of it free of charge which i highly doubt. I noticed the front crown
that fell is porcelain fused to metal. I have the crown that fell but am
distressed trying to figure how they will put it back on if my tooth is
inside of it.

Unfortunately there's no way to tell for certain based on what you say.
It could be a clean fracture or massive decay--if the margins of the
root surface can be exposed it may be possible to remake the crown. It
is also possible the tooth is non-restorable and will need to be extracted.
In any case, if at all possible, get a new dentist. Being a
condescending jerk is enough reason, IMO.

> thanks for the reply. I have an appointment with him tomorrow. Its funny how desperate I feel with this pirate look. If he offers to fix it for free then Ill just take it but if ends up to be anything more complicated than just remaking the crown I will just run out of there. It also sucks that the crowns he used were porcelain fused to metal since he told me he would use porcelain with out the metal for a aestheic purposes.

If that was the agreement it should be honored (that is, all ceramic
vs. porcelain/metal). But if done right, porcelain/metal can be made to
look almost as good as all ceramic, and you get better strength.
Furthermore, if the ceramist isn't good you can wind up with a
non-esthetic all-ceramic crown as well. The talent of the dentist and
lab IMO is sometimes more important in the final esthetic result than
whether a crown is all ceramic or not.

I usually prefer PFM for strengh as well. I will use all procelain for
front teeth, but I will make sure the bite is correct so you don't put
too much biting pressure on your all procelain crown.

I doubt very much he will replace your crown for free. There is not
enough information to determine what cause the crown to fall off.
I believe you had root canal on that tooth based on the fact that
you're not in severe pain. Tooth with root canal are weaker and
especially so for anterior teeth.
Depend on the cause of the fracture, and the strengh of the remaining
tooth structure, it may be possible to put another crown. Otherwise
your choices after extraction are:
1) implant
2) bridge using the 2 adjacent teeth
I agree with Dr. B. Your paying money for your treatment. You don't
have to put up with your dentist.

I saw my dentist yesterday. He seemed almost effortful to be nice. I told him
I was brushing my teeth when the crown fell off. he replied "}oh you must be
one of those effortful brushers or something to the sort. and immediately did
xrays and said "oh wow you really did a number on this one." you reallly
sheared this one" I affirmed it was not an injury so that how did it break?
and "}he replied you tell me. from biting!"
He said it was sheered at the post where it meets the cap but that the crown
must have only stood on because it was cemented. he did not put that original
post he said someone else had. he just replaced the cap and crown
he replaced the tooth. I had explained to him that my pairing front tooth
also felt loose.
I thought he had done this for free but the secretary told me its $404 and
380 was just for the new post. I have no health insurance. she told me it was
going to be 404 to replace the other tooth as well
when he put my initial set of porcelain teeth I think those were all
porcelain. he told me to try them out for 3 weeks when I expressed I was not
comfortable with them, so I did. only because he convinced me if i did not
like them i could return them to the lab and have new ones made I expressed I
would like them narrower. I did not want to offend him so i looked in a
dental book and found the correct dental jargon or so I thought to be "more
masculaine" and thus was the word i used. boy did he go in psycho mode and
even went on to say "}fine you want bug tooth. and went on from there. seemed
even a little agressive with the tools to get the teeth out. put tmeps on and
sent me home
the next day i emailed him an apologetic letter saying i apologized if i
offended him and how I had looked in a dental book and thats where i got the
term, to forgive me if that term was inappropriate. I never told him but i
just thought they looked like big chicklets
he responded extremly neutral and brief. well when it was time to put the
new set of teeth from the lab. I truly feel thats when my post were broken. I
think they were both broken as he was having a hissy fit again about giving
me the bug teeth i want. and the temps had been on my mout for over a year
now. he did alot of cracking and thunking to get all the cement off I rembmer
thinking he a was going insane and broke my teeth. these were according to
him the same crowns made longer which now seemed grayish to me. when I
expressed the new exciting grayish color. he said they are the same teeth. He
obviously thought I was a nuisance i thought so i did not want to press the
envelope.
now a year later this tooth falls out that according to him is so badly
"sheared". I know the other tooth I have there is also loose wanted to know
if there is a way to tell if the post were broken before he put the crowns
and perhaps just cemented on to cover himself with strong cement. I really
did not care if this had happened and would have just looked the other way
and not even care about him not bringing it up if he did but the fact that
hes trying to imply I am responsible for this is very disturbing to me just
because I can almost feel in my gut he did this and is now trying to pass the
buck. I felt so uncomfortable everytime he kept syaing wow you really did a
number on this one.
I do not want him to touch the other tooth if theres a way I can find out by
an x ray. as I am sure it is in the same exact condition. broken but just
holding on with cement, for it is just as loose feeling as the one that fell.
please note I am and always have been very aware of not using my front teeth
to bite it is natural to me as I had these teeth root canaled when I was in
5th grade. and my job is an office job. I eat meat maybe twice a month.
please help!

What's the cause?
Is it caries that was left by the dentist? Or is it a lack of dental
hygiene that caused caries? I don't know, but since the tooth is inside
it, we can assume the crown fits very well and the cement is doing it's
work.
Try to get a second opinion before you sue the dentist, because if it's
your fault, you gonna pay buddy.
Since you describe your dentist as a jerk, you can even consider to
change permanently from dentist. I would! I have a nice dentist who is
very friendly.

is there anyway to tell by looking at the xray of the teeth he has not fixed
i can feel it also is still broken inside but the cement must still be
holding it up. he says i broke the metal post would caries break a metal post
inside the tooth.
