Four days ago, I had five cavities filled (with composite), all on the
upper left hand side of my mouth. Now, whenever I chew food I get a
sharp pain in my mouth where the fillings were placed. Some of the
fillings that I had done were also replacing the silver fillings I had
from a while ago. The teeth are also sensitive to hot or cold. Is
this normal? I really would appreicate anyone's input.
Thank you!

Sometimes this does happen when placing composite restorations. Four days
is not a long enough time to see what will finally happen, and the teeth
might get less sensitive over time. On the other hand, why did you have the
fillings replaced in the first place?

Sensitive after composite filling is common especially after only 4
days. The bigger and deeper the filling the more chance for
sensitivity. Sensitivity should gradually go away. I recommended
spreading some tooth paste on those teeth 5 min before brushing.
Sometimes this helps.
However, pain on bitting may mean the filling is a little high and need
adjustment. If this persist past 1 week, you should have the dentist
check your occlusion on those teeth.
I don't think there is pulpal exposure. There will be constant
throbing pain.
One main advantage that composite has over amalgam is cosmetic. But
amalgam tends to be more durable, in my opinion. I have amalgam
fillings that are over 20 years old. You will be hard pressed to find
a composite filling that will last that long.
