If you are interested in developing discussions related to jaw
disorders, please subscribe to alt.support.jaw-disorders .  It is a
newsgroup that was started a decade ago (or more during planning) and is
currently inactive related to any posts worthy of its original purposes
set forth.

I am known as "Webby" or "The Webby".  I was the founder of
alt.support.jaw-disorders and I'm eager to see the newsgroup
revitalized, should there be adequate and sincere interest.  Spammers
are not welcome to the cause.

Sincerely,
Webby, aka "The Webby"

Hi, Webby! I hope you are doing well.

I believe that we are witnessing a transformation in the use of
technology by the public. As the technology transforms, the public's
use and preferences change too.

Even as the old early-90's "newsgroups" technology ages, statistics
tell us that the use of the World Wide Web and it amazing website
technology has increased. People seem to respond to the ability to use
colorful graphics as well as interactive web site tools.

The proliferation of "blogs" over the last two or three years also
would seem to demonstrate that the public's desire to obtain
information, to write opinions, and to interact with other users is as
high as ever. However, the public's preferences for which tools to use
seem to change as new techology comes of age.

In the late 80's and early 90's, the old "BBS" systems enjoyed a huge
popularity among local computer user groups. (Remember when only a
computer "hobbyist" knew about "modems" and "going online?") With the
building of the Web and the universal proliferation of web browsers,
very few of those systems remain. One by one they have been shut down
in favor of websites.

I still have my old dual-floppy system sitting in the garage somewhere
. . . but time marches on.

Best regards,
- dentaldoc

Hello dentaldoc!  Yes, I'm doing quite well.  Hopefully, you've had an
enjoyable summer.

It's been an interesting course of events we've witnessed "out here",
hasn't it?  IMO, those of us who can relate to the details of your post
are really very fortunate to have had this life experience opportunity.
I have often thought that had I lived in the years of the wagon-trains
heading west in America, I would have wanted to have been one of the
travelers (like many of my ancestors).  Pioneering into the computer
technology that you described certainly can't compare to the hardships
of the people who journeyed across land and sea to make new homes for
themselves; but, cyber-journeying has not been for the faint of heart
either!  I wonder which journey the folks of the 19th century would have
preferred had then been offered a choice!!  ;-)

Every once in awhile, I've made mention of a particular individual and
one of his many books: "Technopoly" by Neil Postman (1931-2003).  From
the back cover of "Technopoly", I'd like to share this comment of The
New York Times Book Review:  "Mr. Postman puts [his ideas] across with
energy, conviction, and considerable verbal dexterity.  His
illustrations of how new technologies can alter society are...vivid and
thought-provoking."  And, Paul Goodman, New Reformation, wrote in a
Foreword (of sorts) "Whether or not it draws on new scientific research,
technology is a branch of moral philosophy not of science."  And ... as
for what it has to do with smd, Chapter 6: The Ideology of Machines:
Medical Technology.

All in all ... I think we have already lived the best of what usenet had
to offer.  Progress has taken hold and your description of that progress
was excellent!  So I find it comfortable to be able to say that I am
pleased to have been a part of "it" and to have come to "know" people
such as yourself, dentaldoc as a result of it all.  The only thing
missing from all this is the future opportunity to actually meet more of
the people whose names, ideas and stories we've come to know so well
over the years.

All my best to you,
Webby

And as for my old dual-floppy ... (Leading Edge), I donated it to a good
cause and I think it lived happily until The End.  (I hope so because I
really loved that machine!!)

In response to some recent activity in asj-d and smd, I thought it might
be a good idea to simply repost this article from August 2006.

Best wishes,
Webby
